Abingdon – This Sunday

So who’s coming to my show then?
Got a mixed bag of aircraft booked to attend ranging from 10 Chipmunks (incl ex-Queens Flight a/c) , 3 Tiger Moths, Harvard, Staggerwing or P51, Pietenpol, Pitts Special, Yak 52 & Yak 18T, Jet Provost x2 (or could be x3), Austers, Tailwind Aircamper through to RN Lynx , RAF Hawks (landing pm) , T28 Fennec & Beech 18 flying in during the day ..about 92 aircraft booked to attend but can say some will not show cos of serviceability etc..
Unfortunetly, no regular Merlin Heli this year cos they all grounded & a Puma Heli cannot pop across either cos covering for the Merlins & lack of serviceable Heli’s to spare..no C130 cos loads away so mil stuff i,m afraid is abit less than i hoped..

Flying is: T28 Fennec, Vampire, Hawk, RN Lynx, BBMF Spitfire, Denny Dobson & RAF Tucano..& hoped to have a Spitfire/Hawk flypast together.

Plus all the ground attractions – Mini Steam engines, Vintage Vehicles, Crafts Marquee, Arena Demos, Spit prototype replica, loads of stalls, Kiddies area etc..

Proceeds as always to the Douglas House Respite Centre in Oxford which was opened by HRH Queen Elizabeth 2 in Feb..supports terminally ill adults

For those who attend on Sunday……in advance many thanks for your support once again!

What an excellent way to kick the season off, first time I’ve been to Abingdon and I’ll certainly be going again. A few of my attempts….

Excellent pics, the light was right for pics, the weather between there and Sywell where I flew from was unbelievable…a good Fayre though.

One of those days

We did try, honest! After waiting around at North Weald this morning with various other pilots for the weather to improve, we left Ok and flew into improving conditions all the way.

Coming up past Didcot from the South we were trying to establish contact – we could hear Abingdon radio (very distorted), but they didn’t appear to be receiving our transmissions. So we circled in the overhead then departed South again. That’s when we had a total radio failure – LEDs flashing and a horrible noise over the intercom – had to switch everything off quick.

Later we realised that the alternator had packed up (it was supposed to have been fixed), so no flaps to land either, as by this time the battery had run flat.

So, it was just as well we didn’t land at Abingdon, because we wouldn’t have been able to restart the engine without an external power source or some brave soul swinging the prop.

At least you had a couple of extra Mustangs.

When we got back to NW, we did a low level pass to alert the tower to our radio failure, but their Aldis lamp blew a bulb when they tried to give us a green light. It was one of those days!

Maybe third time lucky next year.

Hi guys, I wont be arriving until at least 11.00 as I have to take my daughter to a horse riding lesson first so dont have all the fun until get there.
Either plan is OK but a PA might just attract some that have not read this.
Look forward to putting some faces to names.

This is the last chance I shall get to post before tomorrow but I will be able to read the posts on someone elses computer this evening to find out where to meet up.

If no Rv point is decided on, maybe we could get the announcer or commentator to put out a message. 😉

See you tomorrow.

Neal

Neal, I think both ideas are good and I would like to meet up with you guys just to get to know you all. After 12 months of partaking in this forum I think it is about time. I hope the cloudbase is a bit higher though otherwise it might persuade some of the prospective visitors to stay home which, whilst it would be a shame, is probably sensible from the safety viewpoint

How about on the crowd line near the(mobile) control tower. Well, it was near the crowd line last year anyway.

I will be at Abingdon at about 10 o clock.

Spoke to the engineers yesterday, and it looks like the Bulldog’s alternator has been fixed. Will try and get a short flight in tomorrow to test it out. So it looks like all systems go – fingers crossed for better weather.
