Accommodation required – with aviation "twist"

Mrs Waco and I are looking for a two night get away in November.

I’d like somewhere with a historic aviation twist.

Anywhere considered…..all thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

Spark Bridge, Cumbria in the future!

Why not Spark Bridge, Cumbria but that will have to be on your future listing!

Home of ‘Lakes Lightnings’, sit on the veranda sipping your Pimms looking at a Lightning XM172 and a Hunter WT711!

Our fleet is up to 12 at present. 4 full airframes and 8 cockpit/nose sections.

Only Lightning T5 XS420, Lightning F3/6 hybrid XS897 and Harrier GR1 nose XV281 are off site!

We are NOT a museum but we may look at B&B in the future.. or….maybe some film set location for some unusual subject!

Meanwhile, we are still looking for a Gnat airframe/cockpit????? for the collection.

Waco

How about a stay in the George Hotel in Amesbury which has a room devoted to the local aviation history.
Once rested, you could go and visit the local historic aviation sites, Larkhill, Upavon, Netheravon and then the location of RAF Stonehenge. This is always good for winding the tourists up when you turn your back on the stone circle and take more interest in the downland that was an airfield for HP 0/400s.
Of course the museum at Yeovilton is only 40 minutes down the A303 and Middle Wallop’s is 25 minutes in the oposite direction.
Come mid week and you may even see the historic fleet (Harvard, Andover, pre production Hawk etc) from Boscombe Down overhead.

Waco- howsabout a double stop?

Firstly Finningley aka Robin hood, still reletivley recognisable as a former Expansion period airfield & 5-10 mins from Aeroventure- then onto Gamston, you’re only 20 mins up the A1 from Newark AM.

Within reach of DA is the racecourse- home to Britains first air-race in 1909 and NAM is a spit away from the former Balderton where the Poles took off for Arnhem.

just a thought, Rad

P.s. if you want to go further afield I believe that Pembrey in S.Wales is now GA (it’s where the 1st captured Fw 190 landed by mistake)& a nearby hotel is where Amelia Earhart Stayed.

Although you seem to have not suprisingly selected Lincolnshire for its extensive aviation heritage, if you want a hotel with an aviation heritage, there is the Crowne Plaza, Liverpool (the art deco 1939 former airport terminal, not the city center one!). Great for a non-aviation cultural weekend break – but with a considerable aviation heritage, oh, and several older aircraft (Britannia, Prince, Meteor, Jetstream 41) sat outside too.

Thanks very much indeed to everyone who has replied.

Yep I think it has to be Lincolnshire…..and a stay think in the White Heart(anyone been ????)

Loved the idea of Metheringham. A walk round the olf field is always a favourite of mine but I dont think SWMBO will fancy a night stop in the old tower. She finds East Kirkby very “creepy” as well, though she seems more tuned in to such things than I.

The DC-6 diner was attractive but I worked at the airport for over a year so perhaps a little early for a return.

Thanks again!

I’m restoring the Metheringham control tower. If you have sleeping bag then your more than welcome to kip over and keep the pikeys away 😉

that would be a cracking weekend break, i would love it n probably a few forum posters on here would be daft enough also? but i dont think the misses would be up for it lol.

If you stayed at The Oak in Baginton you could visit Airbase and have an evening meal in the DC-6 Diner.

The Oak, next to Coventry Airport’s West Gate, was used as Officer’s Mess for various RAF Squadrons based at Baginton during WW2 and is the usual after-hours ‘haunt’ for volunteers and staff from Airbase.

The DC-6 Diner is a dining experience you won’t get anywhere else in the UK – but best book in advance.

Ironbridge is close to Cosford, yet has interests of its own (Industrial museums) and is in Shropshire, one of the most beautiful counties in England.

Moggy

the Wartime Aircraft Recovery Group (WARG) have their very interesting museum at Sleap airfield (Shropshire Aero Club), inbetween Wem & Shrewsbury. its about 3/4 an hour from Cosford.. also just down the road from Cosford on the M54 is the Boulton Paul aircraft museum. both of these are of course smaller museums that are manned part time so best check opening time beforehand.

Sleap incidently are having their Battle of Britain dinner this sat eve with some wartime veterens attending for a good old nosh up. places still available, £18 a head i think?

The only one I can think of is the St George Hotel at Durham Tees’ airport, used to be the officers mess, for RAF Middleeton St George for RCAF Halifax’s during the war.

Unforunately, not the most tourist friendly place (in terms of things to see), the staff were perfectly friendly, some OK restaurants in Yarm nearby, and didn’t hear any aircraft when on business there myself. It has a number or ornaments and pictures showing its’ history.
Depends what you want in a hotel, check out the reviews and pictures on trip advisor

Combine a visit to Cosford with:

14 November 2011 – 19 November 2011

The Michael Beetham Conservation Centre (MBCC) is one of the finest aircraft conservation centre’s in the world. To enable greater public access and understanding of the centre’s work, it will be opening its doors to visitors for one special week.

Visitors will gain exclusive behind-the-scenes access to aircraft conservation work and have a rare opportunity to view current projects.

Viewing is from 10.15am to 1.00pm and entry is FREE.

The Raven at Much Wenlock just down the road is a nice place to stay

It goes without saying (but I will anyway 😮 ), that a lot of attractions close
down, or reduce their opening hours/days, at the end of October.

I stayed at the Best Western in Ironbridge – much to my surprise the restaurant was excellent. If I remember correctly it has Michelin stars.

Glastonbury – yes certainly different but good fun and the pub behind the square (The who’d have Thought it)was recommended by The Times….rooms were good but the food was again excellent. Also Clarkes shopping village is on the way to the FAA musuem!

You may be respectful, but you’d also be wrong.

As an aside, I went to Glastonbury, the town, not the noisy mudfest.

I swear I was the only male there without a ponytail.

Weird beyond belief.

With very great respect, Moggy, I would delete ‘Shropshire’ and insert ‘Somerset’.

Ditto what Alan said, where are you located, NAM is a good place to visit, and if you ask T.O. nicely, you may get a free C of T.;)
Jim.

Lincoln .7
