It is to prevent the Generator being energised when the aircraft flies without an accumulator (battery) installed.

residual power left from connection/disconnection also again to protect from ingress of foreign objects moister etc that could cause short circuits plug does not get damaged by being dislodged from towing across airfields etc

Perhaps if ground power were applied or the engine(s) run then the loose cables might short circuit to the airframe.
