Ace's Bf 109G recovered…

Borrowed from Aeroplane Monthly mag site.

The wreck of what is believed to be the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2 flown by 208-victory Luftwaffe ace Heinrich Ehrler when he was shot down in 1943 has been recovered from Russia by veteran UK warbird-hunter Jim Pearce. The fuselage is already under restoration in Munich, although some parts are still in the UK. In addition, Pearce has taken delivery of the remains of several Junkers Ju 88s.

That would be it then! I thought the prop blades were a little bit too big at first, now you mention it, it obviously is a backwards flying 109 :diablo:

Of course it is. I am sure it was developed to chase the backwards flying Spitfire mentioned in another thread. How would you think you were able to hunt down a Spitfire flying backwards? You have to fly backwards yourself.
And it seems to have been successful, because there is a complete 109 left, but only a mere prop of the Spitfire. :diablo:

I don’t know much about warbird restoration – but I photographed this Bf-109G-6 in Moscow in 2007……

It was at the Zadorozhny Museum in the northern suburbs of Moscow – in the storage hangar.

On my visit in 2008, it was on display inside the museum…..

Referring back to Hindenburg`s post, does anyone have any pictures of this aircraft when it was recovered in 2003 please?

Oddly, and if this 109-G is “under restoration”, a significantly large number of artefacts from this aeroplane have surfaced in the UK over recent years – mostly via the Jim Pearce route, I believe!

You are probably thinking of the Bf 109B V-10 D-IAKO which was recovered in pieces from Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich at the end of the 80ies. A group called Bavarian Aviation Historians took over the very battered remains and and it would appear to be under slow restoration by them, presumably at Oberschleissheim. Unfortunately, German aircraft restorers are for reasons best known to themselves always very tight-lipped (Flug Werk being a commendable exception). More info here

Very interesting. Talking of Me.109s and Munich, does anyone know what is happening with the early prototype ‘109 that was discovered some years back bureid in the Munich area? It was apparently taken in hand for eventual restoration by the Deutsche Museum, but I have heard nothing about it since.
