Aces High SE.5As?

After a brief discussion with a work colleague yesterday about the actual aircraft in the film Aces High; I was left a little bemused about what the ‘SE.5As’ actually where. I claimed them to be SV.4s while my colleague claimed them to be Currie Wots. Quite happy to take the abuse dished out to me at the time but would equally accept victory if I am correct! Can anyone shed some light on this one please.
Thanks

I had always assumed that these out-takes were all from The Blue Max – some of them certainly are (the recce balloon, for instance), but I’m guessing the scene where “Tommy” goes down in flames is not? (S.E. spinning out of control?)

That was taken from “Von Richtoffen and Brown” Here’ a pic taken durring filming. Again from Lynn Garrison collection.

the Jungmeister G-AYSJ was painted as ” E-622 ” , also in German markings

dh

It looked silver with red ailerons/elevators in the film, but can’t be sure.

I’ve seen some out-takes from Aces High somewhere, and I’m positive that one of the aircraft in it was NOT in film markings!

As has allready been established the SE5s in Ace’s High were modified Stampe’s, The modifications being carried out by PPS at Booker.
However, in the final dog fight of the film the Mini (curry wot based) SE5’s do appear! These Mini’s were constructed for an earlier film “Darling Lili” that was made in Ireland in1968, they were also used in several other films including “You Carnt Win Em All” and “Von Richtoffen And Brown”
Stock footage of these earlier films was used in that final dog fight sequence.
So i guess the correct answer is both do feature in the film :diablo:

Also playing ‘the Hun’ were Viima G-BAAY and Jungmeister G-AYSJ and a Tiger Moth but I’ve never found out it’s identity.

Yep, the S.E.5a would have handed the Fokker its ass! :diablo:

Did anyone notice the film was on ITV a couple of weeks ago? I don’t tend to watch TV much these days, but flicking through the channels on Sky, I saw it playing that Sunday afternoon, and settled down to watch it for the nth time! Definitely my favourite of the genre.

The taxiing Avro 504 replica in the film – is this the one at Brooklands?

Slightly more than obsolete – flying an Eindecker in combat in 1917 (or is it set in late 1916?) would be like taking a banana to a gunfight! Apart from the benefit of the synchronisation gear, they weren’t that impressive an aircraft anyway

Don’t you believe it – just wait till film SE-5 expert ‘The Blue Max’ gets back online this evening! :diablo:

It is also worth checking out these pics on the Air-Britain website:

Great pics. The second one also shows the Fokker E.III that appears briefly in a couple of scenes (even though the type was more or less obsolete at the time the film was set!).

Something tells me that the Salis Collection owns a “stand-off” replica SE5a, but I can’t find a pic of it at the moment.

This may or may not be based on a Stampe airframe….

Ah! They have two, and the site confirms that they are “heavily modified Stampes”.

Looks pretty bloody good, I reckon!

Not to mention the Stampe’s sweptback wings (with rounded wingtips), and differently-shaped fin/rudder.

I found this pic on Flickr of a Wot-based S.E.5a replica, if it helps:

Sadly don’t know if there are any pics of the film replicas online – Melvyn Hiscock’s book on WW1 aircraft has a good pic of one, however (it covers both original flying aircraft and reproductions).

As Daz says, definitely Stampe’s. The Currie Wot SE5a’s are much more noticeable because of their small size

They were Stampe S.V.4s, three of them if I remember correctly. At least one is still flying in the UK.
