In his book ‘The Future British Surface Fleet’, D K Brown mentions ‘the
refuelling platform’ basically a tanker with a flight deck on which
land based planes can refuel, it would be seen as a replacement for scarce AAR tankers – the ship would have no military equipment except for approach radar and its ability to survive would be no greater than that of a big tanker.
He doesn’t say where he would have the superstructure though.
Brown suggests 220m will be sufficient for a F16 or EFA using arrestor gear as a back up in an emergency……..
Would use of an island superstructure built as such from the start cause any problems for the commercial operations of the tanker in peacetime?

No, just Brown’s book published in 1991.
The F-35 and V-22 could open alot of opportunity for such a conversion…….Possibly a solution for countries like Brazil and maybe Argentina sometime in the future.
For example what is Brazil going to do when the Sao Paulo needs to be replaced? As she is already getting very long in the tooth……..:(
