Ads appearing in threads

The mods are discussing the issue with the Webmaster at present. Whilst I confess that I dont like them any more than you do, if it keeps the forum alive, then we will have to put up with it. In these difficult times, all such ventures have to be seen to pay for themselves, or at least make a contribution. I imagine it is not cheap to run the forum, so we have to understand why Key make the choices they do.

Peter posted elsewhere that his solution may switch off Java, which is used for a lot more than ads! If you do want to get rid of the adverts, then do some research; there are ways, but make sure it wont affect your browser in other ways.

So, in your book the users of this forum can’t complain to the mods if something changes to the detriment of the forum? And if it hasn’t slowed down Kev35’s poverty spec machines, well bully for him. Because it sure as hell slowed mine down. The adverts I could learn to live with, the hammering it was giving my connection, not so.
I find it sad that a genuine concern is raised (not only here, but by other members in a thread on the historic forum) and basically brushed aside or subjected to snide remarks. Only Peter has taken the time to address concerns and provide a constructive answer, for which I thank him.

Obviously none (the moaners) of them are so badly off that they have to depend on revenues from advertising to keep their pay check coming in.

As a bean counter I have no sympathy for pure moaners in the current recession and would rather endure a little ‘pain’ to ensure jobs and companies stay afloat

So, I should feel sorry for them? Those in the advertising industry would weep tears at the redundancies over the last couple of years in my own line of work, I’m sure.
But I don’t see what this has to do with the fact that these adverts are intruding on and slowing the forum…

No thankyou. Certainly not if the ramming of adverts down one’s throat is even more prevalent over there than it is here.

Jay – if your assumptions are correct you have a measure of justification for the action but not for the manner in which it is carried out. Since none of us are privvy to the publisher’s reasons we are unable to form a judgment.

The first four words of your third paragraph tell their own story. In my fairly long experience of industry the relationship between suppliers and customers has never been the strong point of bean counters.;):)

Additional revenue source is the most obvious that comes to mind!;)

Here is the fix lads
Go to Tools >> Internet Options >> Security tab >> Custom Level

Scroll down until you reached ‘Scripting’ >> ‘Active Scripting’ >> Click Disable

Edit, I assume the ads require Java, as I get the good old fashioned unfeterred forum on the MoD steam driven device?

Some forum sites charge a modest annual registration fee and I know of an Aircraft Mech site that does that if you wish to post.

In reality they should try living in the USA (I don’t know what Canada, where you are is like with respect to TV and internet advertising)

Where I draw the line is if the broadband gets ‘sucked’ and that’s why good Techs can help optimise advertising to be much less of an impact on the actual bandwidth.

Having said that if you work for CISCO you’d want your customers to use non optimised internet advertising so their network providers buy more bandwidth from CISCO and charge their retail customers even more for the increase.Da de da de da.

It’s the same lark in mobiles and here BT is about to announce the 4G sell off to network providers.
In reality the network providers haven’t got adequate 2G coverage over the tiny island yet so we (‘Joe’ public) are again going to be ‘mugged’.:rolleyes:

I’m having no performance issues at all and as I said earlier the equipment I use is most definitely from the cheaper end of the market.

Kev – the whole point is that Key shouldn’t NEED to explain anything. We have no right, nor even necessity for an explanation of Key’s actions.

No we certainly have no right, but since I presume the Forum is for the benefit of its members, as opposed to the publishers, it would be nice to think that the members views would have been considered. Or perhaps I am being naive.
