Advice needed on travel to Vigna di Valle Museum

Can anyone offer help on the best way to get from central Rome (near to Termini rail station) out to the Italian Air Force Museum on a Friday or Saturday? Is it feasible by public transport or do I need to hire a car or a mixture of both – anyone got any first hand experience?

I have been several times in Vigna di Valle, my put will be to hire a car because beside the museum the surroundings are very interesting, the Bracciano Lake is amazing and there is also a nice little town called also Bracciano with a wonderful castle (I guess CNN anchorwomane Christine Amanpour married there). If you are interested in ancient history you got very close Cerveteri which is famous for a Necropolis of the Etruschi.

The food is fine there so Enjoy

Thank you all for your help.
Damien – so far as the better half goes how right you are – been there got the tee shirt – still happily married after 28 years and that’s after taking her onto an aircraft carrier in the Med during our honeymoon – honesty is the best policy – what a gal!

I’m afraid I forget which train you need to get, but you can get a train to within a 30-40 minute walk of the museum.

The train departs from Rome Ostiense about every half hour to Bracciano which is a few km away. Some also stop at Vigna Di Valle. See Trenitalia. I think there are then local buses going the right way

(Haven’t actually been there myself yet but I’m planning to visit next month)

I would suggest to go by train to Fiumicino and rent a car there. Vigan di Valle is approximately 40 minutes drive from fiumicino and more than one hour from termini.

I would suggest to ask italian harvard’s advice as he gave me road indications which are mandatory

I (and the missus) visited Rome Easter, 2004 and Vigna di Valle was high on the “to see” list.

I decided the best option was to hire a car for a day (off the ‘net beforehand) and drive there. Most of the car hire firms seem to be based at the side of Termini. I Worked out the route beforehand (again via the net) and it wasn’t difficult to find – once we had actually got out of Rome which took nearly two hours!

Great museum and some fantastic exhibits, hardly anyone else there when we were. Shame for the museum but great for photography.

PM me if you want to know more.

Roger Smith.
