Advice on Canon SX40HS

I recently did a very good deal on a second hand SX40 Bridge. I have the
manual, but could do with some advice from someone who has experience
with this camera.
Main issue is stopping auto focus, and focussing manually. I was trying to
focus on a bird in the garden, and the camera wanted to focus on the
background.

Although I finally go this shot.

Alan. For what it’s worth, it’s a good shot, the background is how I would want it, as it makes the bird, a JAY stand out. I would be quite happy with that shot, it’s nice and clear.

Can I interject obliquely? I am on the point of buying a Canon Power Shot SX500, based on advice received. Should I reconsider?

Perhaps this should be in Photographic….any advice welcomed.

I can’t really answer regarding the SX500. Maybe you would be better off
asking on a photographic forum ?, same probably goes for my query.

Could only see an “airshow” photo section on here.

P.S. I just googled SX40 manual focus, and there seems to be quite a few useful links
