AEF in a Chipmunk 1969 – is this you in the back seat?

This picture was taken on 4 May 1969.

I wonder if the cadet passenger continued his interest in aviation and is a member of this forum.

That weekend the Chipmunk was operating from Oxford airport which can be seen in the background. A spot of formation flying alongside another de Havilland aeroplane – a Dragon Rapide – would have made his flight especially memorable and probably the envy of his fellow cadets!

WG460 then went on to become part of Aberdeen UAS operating out of Dyce. It was there the following year it made a forced landing following engine problems and was damaged beyond repair.

Gotya – I know exactly where you are now. I was thrown by what looks exactly like a hard runway, which runs crosswise to the current one. The second image I think has Yarnton below the aircraft with Begbroke in the distance?

Thanks!

Hi Adrian,

The road running left to right is the Woodstock Road (A44), the buildings directly underneath the Chipmunk at the time were a youth detention centre – later the site of Campsfield House immigration centre – located off Langford Lane. In 1969 Oxford airport was predominately a grass airfield, both the airfield and the surrounding area have seen considerable development in the intervening years. Here’s another image.

Not me in the back seat (I was -2 in 1969), but just wondering the a;llignment of the photo – I can’t make sense of it on Google Maps.

I live in Kidlington, hence the interest.

Adrian
