Whilst browsing on a maps app on my phone last night, I came across this odd pattern of fields between Louth and Horncastle. You can normally pick old airfields out very easily and at first I thought it was one, but it looks enormous. It probably isn’t even an airfield but the straight pieces of what appear to be concrete just made me wonder. Does anyone know if it is or isn’t aviation related? And what base(s) it is?

Probably areas of spring-drilled maize to act as game cover in the following autumn prior to the pre-Christmas shoots. The main crop area is probably winter-drilled wheat/barley.

Do you mean the stuff visible here?
That’s what I assumed. I’m even more sure it’s chalky soil now because if you look towards the bottom there’s another field with a rough edge where you can see the “concrete”. It’s the reason for the regular shaped patches of ploughed soil that have me beat.

I was going to print screen and paste an image of the site, as the thread title would suggest. But I’m using a iPad, and I haven’t a clue what I’m doing. Perhaps someone might be able to tell me how, or post their own print screen? Thanks.

It looks to me as though it might be very chalky soil – there’s a field in there with white edges (might be maize) that shows the very pale soil up. Or possibly tracks have been surfaced with chalk chippings?

Just had another thought (v dangerous in one of my age!!).
Any chance there might have been a Decoy Site in the area? Staight line crop/soil marks are relatively ‘modern’ (I’ve lost my DOBDA GE overlay).

At a first ‘shufti’.
Looking at the crop/soil marks I can see some evidence of Palaeo river channels. There’s a Bronze Age barrow at TF295923. Some of the straight-line soil-marks might, possibly, be either Roman drainage channels – or even salt-pans. The village of Withcall goes back to (at least) the middle 1500s.
Your best bet may be to contact the Lincs Co Council Archaeology lot at Tel: 01522 782070, Fax: 01522 554829, Email: Dev_PlanningEnquiries@lincolnshire.gov.uk. If they don’t know, they will know who does!

Woodthorpe is in that vicinity, (There’s is also Kelstern but that’s north of Louth.). But the whole area around Louth used to part of the Lincolnshire Fens. It could be you’re seeing dikes and drainage channels from a reclamation effort.
