aeriel torpedo

my mum was telling me the other day that the only time she was scared during the war was when an aeriel torpedo dropped on their street !!!!took the front off a row of houses but didnt go off.
then I looked it up on the net, and aeriel torpedos are torpedos dropped from planes that are aimed at battle ships . like what happened to bismark / swordfish etc , so wot was an ariel torpedo doing on a middlesbrough street ,
will have another chat with her and find out more about this episode of her life but in the meantime any background on aeriel tprpedo,s mach appreciated ????????????? web says JU88, HE111 , HE177 .

WILL CHECK BACK LATER THANX IN ADVANCE

had a chat with mum and she was right all along IT WAS an ariel torpedo , but it wasnt up here in middlesboro , turns out it happened when she was evacuated to stay with grandads family in PLYMOUTH , she lived on the embankment near devonport docks ?
so theres the nautical target conection, will go on the web and find more about these docks during the war , will start with plymouth newspaper archive thanx for all your help , P.S. Niel Medcalf your living dangerously mate , as it turns out she was buzz bombed as well ( later on in london ), and says she,s not bloody likely to mix the two up!!!!!! thanx anyway.
also thanx to gent who posted photo wow these things were huge …..
no wonder it demolished a row of houses , and thank god it didnt detonate !!! I wouldnt be writing this ….. sobering thought.

TT’s is probably the best explanation, could always have been a real torpedo dropped by accident – remember watching a documentary about the Swordfish, an an old pilot was in history after a crash (I think), when a dummy concrete torpedo crashed through the roof at landed at the foot of his bed, apparently he then passed out into the nurses readily available bosom! (Great excuse!)

Not sure – I think she may have meant a Parachute mine –

My dad had one for years and a Mk XIV torpedo when the co-op in Rushden was cleared (it was an armaments factory during the war) the two were sectioned training items – unfortunately he sold em both when i was a nipper.
