There is a difference between the IL96 and the IL 96-300! The IL 96-300 has nearly the same economics as the A340-300.

More like head up a$$.

Don’t be silly mate. Of course your safety in an aircraft is defined by whether the aircraft was made in Russia or not. Boeings never crash. Except when used as cruise missiles, and then they do a much better job than a crappy old Russian plane could. Even an An-225 loaded with 250 tons of HE couldn’t have brought down those world trade centre towers… they were just too well built with super western building technology and knowhow… that is why they look so pretty you just wanted to go up and down the elevators all day long. It took pretty, super western boeings to bring those towers down, and if they hadn’t been used for that they could have flown safely for another 100 years without any maintainence or fuel… simply because they look pretty. That is the most important design feature of an aircraft afterall… how pretty it looks.

tonyosborne and GZYL, you stop letting facts get in the way of a few good rants at how ugly all Russian things are. It was the west that saved you during dubya dubya two… if it weren’t for boeings you’d be speaking german or japanese…

Yeah, yeah, whatever

No secret, I love Russian aircraft, apart from one or two I don’t think that there is an ugly one among them. IMO you could’nt call the 747 pretty but its functional and does its job well and I acknowledge that fact. Serious question, how many of you on here have worked with Soviet/Russian airliners and been fortunate enough to enjoy trips on their flight decks? (or even in their cabins?) It would be nice to find out that some of you have and are basing your opinions on these aircraft by having had experience of them close up and personal. I’m not attempting point scoring here but I spent many years working with them, hence my admiration, some have said on here, passion for them and the crews who fly them. By all means rubbish their aesthetics but it seems to me that alot of the rubbishing of these fine aircraft is done from the point of view of “how they look” or, God Forbid, where they are made and some dubious “safety statistics”, not often on the capabilities, safety and longevity of them. As supurbly put by Matthew Murray these aircraft operate daily and safely in places and climates where other types dare not go, So come on guys, I know its personal taste and all that but credit where its due (Even if your’re not keen on them) Rant over…….Thank You!

Tupelov 114,124,134,144,154,204.
Ilyushlin 18,76,86,62
Antanov 2, 3, 24,34,124, 225,10,12, 74,140

This may take you a while bmused so just give me an overall view.In my opinion they are all ugly except the Tu 134.

Point is, don’t judge a book by its cover.

I know full well the capabilities of russian aircraft such as the An-124.
However, I still maintain Russian aircraft, though practical, are some of the most ugliest craft ever to fly.

Do you think the Il 76 is ugly as well as the An 34

Now what was that about bits falling off airliners… LOL

Yes the missing wheel has been logged and maintenance have been notified, the good people of Southern Armenia are currently scouring the fields for it (lol).

Actually I took that picture and e-mailed it to Gemini Jets in the USA, they are sending me a replacement wheel for it.

Actually, just reading Andrewm’s post. Don’t book with a Russian Airline then, I don’t see whats so bad about Russian designs. They operate in some of the most severe climates, day in day out that your average Airbus or Boeing wouldn’t cope with. Try setting you B747 Freighter down on grass runway where your AN-124 would get in and back out…the fact that many many of these aircraft are still going is testiment to the design for which you are putting down so coldy without proper understanding of the aircraft….

And your point is……..

I love the new Aeroflot livery, especially on the Soviet aircraft. It looks great on the Western types but so classy on the Russian planes.

To state the obvious here there must be something wrong with me…a chalky old Aeroflot scheme on an IL-18 or a classic red / white D.O.S.A.A.F scheme on a Yak-52 makes me all teary eyed.

However the new “silky flag draped over tail” schemes such as Aeroflot’s new one, Emirates and BA do look a treat.
