AeroMexico 757

The Aeromexico that crashed a few years back due to the Static vent being covered and the loss of situational awareness seems strage.

The 757-200 has a mix of digital and analogue displays, so if the Pitot / Static system was giving incorrect readings could the pilots not have concentrated on the GPS as this is independent of the Static system?

On another thought does the Static system on newer a/c like the 777 give inputs to the digital display or is it a GPS system that gives the input to the display?
