Aeroplane Monthly – Where and When

Hello has anyone managed to buy the latest edition of Aeroplane Monthly? It’s the 5th of the Month and still no sign in W H Smith – getting slight withdrawal symptoms.

Oh, I appreciate that this is the “Flypast” Forum, but even they are not without fault at times. I remember once – a few years ago – waiting to buy the latest issue – having to wait days and day beyond the publication date. Things became some desperate that I ended up phoning Key Publishing asking if they had gone out of business…

Unlike many of those who frequent this forum, I don’t get out much (airshows, museums and other expensive luxuries), so I rely on these two magazines to keep me happy.

Sad, I know…

Phil

Some general points about magazines in the UK.

They are usually ‘late’ due to distribution issues, not often the mag itself.

If you subscribe, you are also giving you money to the magazine, rather than a cut to Smiths. If you’d like to see the magazine next month/year/decade that’s the sensible route.

Smiths (as jeepman has said) have rather a stranglehold on the magazine biz. WHSD (WHSmith distribution) control some fightening percentage of the UK magazine biz – yes, probably your local corner tobaconist’s mags too…

If you buy it every month, or you want it ASAP subscribe. if you believe you buy each issue on merit, then use the newsagent. That’s the choice – the rest is fluff.

Cheers!

Can you use words like Aeroplane and monthly in same same sentence on this Forum ????

I got my copy on Saturday in WH Smiths. There’s a great photo to the right on page 55 by an up and coming “young” photographer !!!!

I’d always been one of the ‘go and have a look at the shelves’ brigade, but after missing a couple issues of both magazines earlier this year I’ve subscribed. I’d recommend it; you know your issues will arrive, and you’re saving money in the long run.

W H Smug

There has been a big review ongoing in WHS shops to look at the magazines stocked. The bottom line is that although you may have been getting a particular magazine at WHS for any number of years there is no certainty that it will be stocked in the future.

I have been in intersting correspondence with the ever so helpful customer relations people at WHS. About as much use as a chocolate teapot!

They apparently have a shop save scheme which should allow you to reserve/order individual magazines (at a price – anything up to 3 months deposit required at the whim of individual shop managers)

I ended up down the subscription/order from the little local newsagent route

A classic example of corporate profit over customer satisfaction!

For heaven’s sake, have you actually tried talking to them? Has it occurred to you there might be a problem beyond their control that they don’t know about and they might be glad of the heads up?
