Aeroseum Gothenburg

Although not fully open, Aeroseum, based in a Cold War underground hangar at the far side (Säve Depå) of Gothenburg City Airport, is offering guided tours on Tuesdays at 1300 and 1880, and Thursdays at 1300.
I partook of such a tour today and found some interesting exhibits.
(1) A general view of the tour in progress.
(2) The very last operational Viggen, AJSH 37911, with a peek inside its cockpit (3) and the message written on the side by the last pilot (4): “Det sista flygningen Niklas Sandström 051208 Urban Röd Akktu Stakki”. “The last flight, by Niklas Sandström on 8 December 2005, Red U Lone Wolf”.
(5) and (6) Nearing its first flight after restoration is an Sk 16, otherwise known as a North American/Noorduyn AT-16.
(7) Also under restoration is a Focke Wulf Fw 44J Stieglitz, known in Swedish service as the Sk 12.This has a Bramo SH 14A4 150 hp radial engine made by BMW Berlin and is aid on the label to be “very easy to start”.
At the present time the museum has two Viggens, at least two Drakens, a pensioned off Coastguard Rheims/Cessna 337G SE-GMM, a Huey, Alouette, a replica Bleriot and several privately-owned GA aircraft in storage (wingless).
More photos can be posted if anyone is interested!

Note that 35415 is fitted with a non standard canopy. Being a J 35F-1 Draken 35415 should have the F-type canopy and not the one used on the earlier versions. So is the case also with the other Draken at Aeroseum, J 35F-2 35528, marked as “9-00” (a “fake” paint work, it last served with F 10). Being a J 35F-2 this also lack the IR-scanner under the nose. Here is a pic of a regular J 35F-2, 35515.

The canopies were changed on these a/c in the mid-1980s when both went to the States in a exchange deal that would bring a DH Mosquito to the Swedish AF museum. Things didn’t turned out as planed and both Drakens was bought back by the Swedish defence material agency in ca 1990 and been stored at Säve ever since.

The HKP 6B Jet Ranger is 06051. It was during the expedition YMER 80 reg SE-HLZ. A second HKP 6B was reg SE-HLY (06044).

More pictures and info

(8) Augusta-Bell 206 Jet Ranger, one of two carried aboard the icebreaker Ymer in the summer cruise to the Arctic in 1980. Apart from reconnaissance and transport, these helicopters were used to help in the polar bear census. The right rear door was removed and anaesthetic darts were fired at the bears. Hence the polar bear tally on the nose, one with a crown above denoting that the King was present on that occasion. The first Jet Ranger, Hkp6, was supplied to the Swedish Defence forces in August 1968 for a mere SEK 664 000 fully equipped.
(9) Alouette 02036 Hkp2, these first arrived in January 1959.
(10) Coastguard Cessna 337, SE-GMM was the Swedish Coastguard’s first aircraft of their own. This model is equipped with STOL wings and a SLAR (sideways looking airborne radar) underneath. Oil in the coastal waters can be detected with this at up to 30 km day, night or in fog.
(11) Viggen 37094 – cockpit acces to this and most of the other aircraft is possible, as you can see from the ladders by their sides.
(12) Draken 35415 and Viggen.
(13) A different Draken and the Viggen 37911.

Nice pictures, Papa Lima 🙂

The development of the Aeroseum at Göteborg/Säve (the former base of F 9 Wing) can also be followed at the website http://www.aeroseum.se/

Regarding the AJSH 37 37911, this was last operated by the 1. Sqn of F 21 Wing at Luleå, also known as “Urban Röd”. This is the squadron badge:
http://home.swipnet.se/peters_flygsidor/images/Urban_Rod.jpg

Akktu Stakki is the Lapplander motto of “Urban Red” and means “Lone wulf”.

The AT-16/Sk 16A will become SE-FUD. It is the former Fv16068.

The Fw 44J/Sk 12 is SE-BWZ and is on loan from Svedinos.
