AEW Shackleton Question.

Does anyone know why they persevered with the (VERY!) old APS-20 radar set? Surely it could’ve been replaced relatively cheaply? It must’ve been next to useless within about 5 years of entering service!

It worked better than the modern GEC radar for the Nimrod AEW.

Basically because they already had it, and it was being continually upgraded. It wasn’t still using the original electronics or software. Some considerable distance away from useless, and certainly far better than nothing.
