AF and low budget airlines

I have a question in mind which bugs me for a while.

Everywhere in europe, no-frills airlines are launched and some of them are quite successful and having a fast groth.

Everywhere but ….. France!

Do you think that the french goverment and AF are lobbying to keep them out?

Do you think that AF privatisation on next year will change this situation?

I don’t really have a problem with that, it’s official name is Glasgow Prestwick International Airport… It’s as misleading as calling Stansted or Luton ‘London’, really.

Not that bad Saab :).

Actually they don’t fly to Paris (Neither CDG nor ORY) but to Beauvais Tille. This is small airport 100km noth of PAris.

I flew with them ealry January and that’s ok. Car park is for free, safe and their fares are so low (49€ for one leg Paris Dublin) that it’s worth it.

RE: AF and low budget airlines

lol!

Milan Bergamo = Rome North.
Liverpool = London North.

Imagine their theoretical US expansion…

Reykjavik = New York North
Kansas City = Los Angeles East

Unless I had a few days to kill (and nothing better to do than waste time) I probably wouldn’t use Ryanair. However, Easyjet do seem to actually fly to some proper airports!

Just to let you know, Ryanair are starting a new route from London Stansted to Strasbourg on 31st October 2002. They are also increasing frequency on Milan Bergamo from 2 to 3 flights a day and Rome Ciampino from 3 to 4 flights a day!

I read somewhere that Lufthansa pilots are paid a fortune – USD 350,000 for an A310 captain.

Good suggestion. We all wonder why they always achieve what they wnat. Pilots in Iberia…are like God….You don´t know how powerful they are.

I know of course, but my statement is about low fares airlines in France, when I buy a ticket from Paris to Nice at 29€ I’m not interested by the nationality of the carrier.

So on domestic lines in France there is 2 low fares airlines the french and soon dead Air Lib Express and the british and still alive Easy jet.

RE: AF and low budget airlines

Why not ensure that all new pilots are contractually non-unionised?

Or why not hire new pilots for the low cost outfit?

RE: AF and low budget airlines

Bad for French consumers. I suppose it´s due to France is not a country famous for liberalizing markets. And Air France, it´s a part of France. I think the grips of the airline in the country are still too strong for a real competition. But time comes, and under the EU regulation, many sectors have to allow other operators in their market. Lufthansa Empire is fading and in France Low cost will have to be accepted, whatever AF likes it or not. In Spain things are slightly different. There are not real oposition to Iberia. But Iberia is private and wants to participates in the low cost market. So I anounce a new low cost called Iberia Express. But the main problem is that the Pilots trade union which is really strong won´t allow a shift of flights from Iberia to Iberia Express and it´s expected that it happens what happened with Viva Air. The first low cost, belonging to IB but closed for that reason. I hope, now, being a private airline the CEO will be able to broke the pilots backmail.

RE: AF and low budget airlines

We have two low fares airlines in France Air Lib Express and….Easy jet on the most popular route (Paris to Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, Montpelier).

Not sure that we need more, but it’s true that Hexagon and FlyEco (by the former chairman of Corsair) will fly before the end of the year.

RE: AF and low budget airlines

Right. AirLib operates a very limited number of routes.
EasyJet , Ryanair, Buzz are also here , but there is no real French budget airline.

RE: AF and low budget airlines

Doesn’t Air Lib Express operate low cost flights?Also you have Easyjet and Buzz doing low cost flights in France.But I see what you mean,there doesn’t seem to be as many low cost carriers compared to other European countries.
