For a change, in deference to the adage of ‘train hard, fight easy’, I’d like to shift the discussions on to the area of pilot training.
In particular, I’d be interested to know what you think are the main characteristics of various air forces training programmes for fighter pilots and mud movers. Apart from a basic common group of topics (theory of flight, ACM, etc) what are the major differences in terms of fighting philosophy, strategic preferences, doctrine? Are these differences due to territorial imperatives (Israel having to be aggressive in conflicts because of the impossibility to retreat)? Also are there differences in the way the knowledge is passed on (rigidly, more relaxed…).
What would you say are the strengths and weaknesses of the programmes you are familiar with?
