After The Airshow

During the summer they sore through the clouds and delight the crowds. But like wasps they disappear in the winter. This is where they go 🙂

Anyone remember the Spitfire Diamond Jubilee Show in 1996.
Weather was breezy if I recall but Duxford closed the gates at 12 as the airfield was full up. Can only remember this happening twice in my years attending. Posting photo of back page of programme.

wasn’t that the year that the BBMF flew in formation with other Spitfires hadn’t they been given special dispensation to do so ???

I think probably the best Legends ive been to for a while was 2008, and definitely the 2010 main Duxford show in September will take some beating. For those who can remember the centenary of flight show watching a 747 perform over Duxford field will be remembered as a highlight. I didn’t have a digital camera then if but someone can post some images im sure they will be welcome and would bring back memories ? 😀

Not my pics but credited to dmorgan910’s photostream stood with my mouth almost open as this thing seemed to hanging in the air. Was displayed within the confines of the air feild almost at Duxford.:D

What was the point in posting the original pics twice ….??? They are a bit bloody big !! you’re not likely to miss them ????

I think it was simple mistake on part of the person posting the reply. Should have removed the links before posting reply. I have done it myself before 😮

Think this should be prob “Before the show”. Anyone remember the BBMF Hurricane nose over when the undercarriage collapsed. Think June 2004 is correct.

Yes I agree. I am not brave enough…yet! I only joined in October but it’s very rewarding and you can certainly learn a lot – in amongst the occasional squabbles and friendly banter.:)

My reward was to be allowed into airshows for free which also included my family. towards the end this was stopped and it did sour my enthusiasm but I carried on until childred came and my time was required at home. Happy memories non the less.

That does seem rather mealy-mouthed of them! Do you still visit the museum and/or the shows – strictly fee paying, of course??:)

I worked as a volunteer at Duxford for over 15 years. I worked full time and then chose to do one Sunday a month up at the airfield. I officially worked for the imperial war museum on all their static airframes. As another member correctly quoted that not enough people ever work there I was very fortunate to be loaned to flying groups as and when required. I was unpaid for the entire duration of my time at Duxford and travelled totaling a 200 mile round trip each time i attended. My reward was to be allowed into airshows for free which also included my family. towards the end this was stopped and it did sour my enthusiasm but I carried on until childred came and my time was required at home. Happy memories non the less.

How many people are there at Duxford who work on the warbirds based there?

Not enough – and most paid less than your average garage mechanic –

They are indeed. I really enjoy my “out-of-season” visits. The days are quiet and you have more time to look and often, as above, see under the skirts of some of those beautiful aircraft.:)
