"Against the Odds" – Yorkshire Air Museum 11&12th May

Not so much airshow photos, but a rare chance to see the YAM Halifax outdoors for their RAF themed event.

I hadn’t been long there on Friday afternoon, and still setting up my tent when my Jeep was requested for a press photoshoot with the Halifax. My Jeep is normally seen in USAAF markings, but last year for the 100th anniversary of the RAF, I made some magnetic plastic RAF markings. Here’s one of my captures during the photoshoot. The press photos ended up in the Telegraph, Times and Yorkshire Post.

Last year, the Halifax was next to the hangar, backed onto the field used for the overflow car park. This was fine until the car park filled up and from that point on, modern cars featured in the background of all the photos. This year, the Halifax was parked on the grass near the tower, opposite the hangar and nature reserve. This also allowed the Halifax to be viewed from all sides.

It had been raining quite a bit during the previous week and on Friday evening, but dried up for the weekend, apart from one short shower on Saturday. One of the BBMF Spitfires made a flypast on Saturday afternoon, but as the passes were all directly over head, all I captured were the usual underside pictures.

Late on Saturday, there was a re-creation of a VE-Day Elvington picture, which can be found on their Facebook page. The original picture also had the top deck of the tower occupied, but nobody was allowed on top for the re-creation.

On Saturday evening, I took my Jeep back to the Halifax for a little photo shoot of my own.

While there, I got the Halifax up and running, seen through the rear window of the Jeep……..

OK, some photo editing may have been involved in the engine start proceedure!

Sunday began with an atmospheric mist over the airfield and another opportunity to catch the Halifax in a different light. The mist soon burned away to give a very hot day, with little wind to provide cooling.

Both days saw a good turnout from the public and everyone seemed to enjoy the weekend. The museum was very pleased with the way it went and have confirmed the dates for 2020.
