Does anybody which countries besides the USA operate or operated agressor squadrons? I believe Russia did, but I can’t remember the squadron name/number. They mainly used MiG-21s and some MiG-29s I think.
Also: The USMC’s F-5Es are nearing the end of their service life soon. Which a/c should replace it?? I know that the USN is seriously considering to operate surplus USAF F-16A/Bs (they used to operate F-16Ns, but these are retired now).
I believe that the USAF’s F-5Es are all gone now, the USAF only operates F-16s as agressors (C/D models).
Today the US services operate the same a/c as agressors and front-line a/c (i.e. F-18s by USN/USMC and F-16s by USAF). I wonder if this is smart. When agressor squadrons were activated for the first time in the Vietnam era it was thought necessary for them to operate different a/c then those operated by front-line squadrons. This has changed now.
I feel that the services should go back to previous doctrine. Maybe the USAF could operate F-18s as agressors, and the USN/USMC could use F-16s. They could even buy a totally different type (off the shelf) that isn’t operated by any of the services, similar to the F-5E use. The USMC did operate F-21A Kfirs for a short period. And the Germans use MiG-29s for this task. Which a/c would be the best one for such agressor squadrons??? Mirage 2000?, MiG-29?, Rafale?
Any thoughts, anybody?
Ference.
