Ah, De-Havilland! Tridents at GLA Part II

And one at LHR 🙂
Not the best of scans from pics I’m afraid just a bit of history I suppose.
G-ARPP was the first jet a/c I ever flew in and of course it ended it’s days as the BAA Firemans playthingy at GLA before being cut up for scrap (although I believe the cockpit survives).
And does anyone else remember the Tridents other unique feature other than the Trident III’s 3 and a half engines?

1) Dusk abeam Linwood.
2) LHR with a Trident 2 in the lineup, fairly rare at GLA unless on a NCL diversion.
3) That old BEA livery was gross.
4) G-ARPR awaits pax on Stand 26, anyone ID the 2 a.c behind?
5) Touchdown 24.
6) G-ARPP, the first jet a/c I flew in, retired to GLA but now scrapped apart from the cockpit I believe.
7) Blast off, 3 RR Speys and a RB-162!
8) Stand 26.
9) Three Tri-Jets, a sight not often seen at other Scottish airports if at all.
10) Taxying onto stand after a flight from LHR.

The nose gear was offset to assist in space saving for the Smiths autoland equipment.

Care to elaborate ?

Not in any great detail. The problems are not 100% associated with the tow bar.

Trident nosewheel

Here’s the diagram I mentioned, from page 57 of “The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Commercial Aircraft” edited by Bill Gunston.

Care to elaborate ?

Apparently Glasgow is one of the only airports that does not possess a tow-bar for a TU154. On occasion Balkan Hols forget to load one onto their aircraft meaning that a new stand has to be allocated ie one that doesn’t require the aircraft to have to be pushed back. Could be more probs next year however, the current A320s are known to be on a short-term lease and the airline are evaluating the TU204!

Hopefully, but if they don’t then there is a very very high probability that it will be banned from GLA. The thing is becoming too much of a pain every time it is in.

The nosewheel retracted sideways into the fuselage and could only do it if it was displaced to one side (by 2 feet (61 cm) as it happens).
I have a nice diagram but no time to scan it just now.

As far as I’m aware Balkan are dropping the 154’s at the end of this season (if it hasn’t happened already?)
