Ah, Winter of our discontent. Tis the season to take things apart. Why, you ask? Well, if we didn’t what would the mechanics do besides sit around and drink coffee. OK, maybe there’s a little more to it than that.
So, on the list are…
1. A complete firewall forward inspection of the Sea Fury, including pulling the prop to check the mags and distributor. Disassemble gear and machine new landing gear parts to replace cracked original forgings. Fabricate new instrument panel with Garmin 430, new intercom and any other bells and whistles I can think of.
2. Recover clip wing Cub. Might as well do a major rebuild while we’re at it, zero time the engine, new instruments. Keep it light! No electrical.
3. New autopilot in the L-39. Inspections on the L-39 and T-6. Smoke systems? We’ll see how the time goes, but it’s in the works.
And if that’s not enough put a 30 cal. machine gun on the Ferret, because what’s the point of having a Ferret without a machine gun.
Will someone please hurry Spring along…

Caption competition.
If this is a caption contest, I think Steve’s photo should be:- When not flying by the seat of his pants, he polishes memorial plaques by the seat of his pants!

Hi Steve
Some of us have been talking and we reckon you look a little too comfortable in that pose on the bench.
Next time I am in the UK I am going to look at some of Melvins “special” German magazines that he keeps in the secret locker in the rearwin hanger – I bet you are in some of them.
Kindest regards
John P

Most excellent posting on the Messerschmitt, Canada TD. You’ve obviously fallen in with the whole concept of posting about anything except warbirds, or the topic du jour. And now, for your viewing pleasure, here’s a photograph of a man on a bench… 😮
Nice to see you keeping to the vintage theme.

Maintenance……..
Hi guys,
This ‘Winter maintenance’ thread seems to have plummeted off topic into ‘what to play with when the planes are in bits’ and ‘whose b@lls can we bust today’.
Thats whats so special about this forum!
A bit distracted of late due to a biz thats gone ballistic etc. but here’s an update on the winter programme on my planes –
Falcon – Annual inspection, prop overhaul, nose bowl repair, ‘original’ fuel filler flaps to replace the current non-standard wind-down jobs (ugh! – Miles got it right in ’36), some rectification on the current ‘out of trim in pitch and yaw (bits of cord doped on the controls!), cosmetics.
Magister – Annual inspection, Compasses on overhaul, feasibility study into getting U/C restored to original ‘Airdraulic’ spec’, cracks to wing skins at leg attachments (known problem – WW2 repair scheme in progress!) cowlings away for repairs/ polish, cosmetics. Reg. change from V1075 – N3788?? Wait and see if I do it………
If anybody with a camera is passing OW, both are in the front of the workshop in loads of bits and would make a really good picture.
Ryan – Annual inspection, both ASI’s off for calibration/ investigation into sig. variation in readings between the two ( we’ll probably need to explore a position error too), cosmetics.
All 3 will come out of the workshop looking fabulous for next season!
Robin Regent – Annual inspection (looking at placing an order for a new Regent for delivery mid 05…., talking to my bean counters this am)
Toybox? – Aston DB5 finally back after a 2 year overhaul – wonderful! Aston Zagato Volante ready for collection after rad and rack replacements, service.
Mind you, I don’t tend to play with the cars over the winter either…
9.00am… Better go and do some work!

Very good! Well I will admit my link was tenuous but you chaps started it talking about bikes!! I just attempted to get the topic back on its meandering path loosely onto warbirds again via another messerschmitt product

This takes me back to the first fuel crisis-after Suez. There were stories (scurrilous I’m sure) that the Messerschmit was made from war surplus 110 cockpit covers. 🙂 around 60 mpg though, I believe.
mmitch.
Yep 60mpg no problems! First Schmitts powered by the engine used to turn over the gas turb’s in the 262. No other aeroplane parts in the Schmitt. However, the one I wrote off had a makers plate from a 109 in it. Last fuel crisis out came the Schmitt!

Cheeky chappie!!! Don’t knock it til you’ve tried….I’ll swap you a go in my Schmitt for a trip in your gorgeous Fury!!
It (the Schmitt) certainly has the directional stability of a T6 on wet grass!!!!
And Anna, it is lovely, Emil is now crying at the thought of you not liking her! To be serious (well kinda!) I am taking the Schmitt to Duxford next year and it will be available for ‘test’ drives. I ‘flew’ a test pilot in her once and he could not stop smiling….but then again he took me in his aircraft and I reciprocated in the grinning inanely department.
Well, I surpose, its different 😉 Anna 😀 😀

Most excellent vehicle, Canada TD. I would say it rates right up there with the Citroen 2CV.
Does it have an engine, or do you just paddle.
