AHO part ID (possible armament part)

I’m slowly getting the crates unpacked and catalogued from the recent acquisition, and in a box that had a pair of Beaufighter gun cocking mechanisms were a pair of these things.

I suspect they are also to do with armament, as you can see in one pic there is a FIRE and SAFE mode. It is a MK II and the part number is AHO10172, though on a brass plate on top it is AHO15706. It still has a Beaufort Aircraft Spares tag attached (though that does not neccessarily mean just Beaufort)

Anyone recognise it or know what it does? The buttons underneath depress into the body of the unit. Unit is a decent weight too.

Clickable Thumbs I hope they work as Photobucket is doing all sorts of silly things at the moment.

AM, that’s it indeed. Fantastic job spotting that (apologies for the pics dramas, they were supposed to open up as full images)

Much appreciated to everyone for the help, it really proves invaluable when trying to work out the contents of a box (or 20 in this case) 🙂

Although the pictures are very small, I would say it’s a Sear Release Unit, Mk II, for use with a 20mm Hispano cannon. Therefore, more likely Beaufighter than Beaufort.

Thanks Mark – figured the AHO was Dunlop indeed. The tricky part of all this sorting out is working out what is Beaufort and what is Beaufighter – of course there was a lot interchangeable between the two. Working from the Beaufort IPC is a big help, but still no success with the Beaufighter IPC. Either way, it’s a good collection of parts that I saved from going to the tip !

One box had a gear reduction unit in it which I spotted in the Beaufort IPC, & with an FB part number I assume it was for the Taurus engine, and I wonder if it was also for a Hercules….another thing to sort out one day 🙂

Sorry about that – stupid Photobucket beta version is giving lots of people strife.

But thanks for the suggestion, given it has a Beaufort tag on it, then it was probably used on them – nice one ! Catalogued and added into the collection 😎

I can’t get the images to open but this looks similar to the pneumatic firing mechanism fitted to the bottom of Browning machine guns.
