Air Atlantique: DC-6 G-SIXC is for sale…

Hello all,

After having been grounded for at least 18 months Air Atlantique has apparently decided to put DC-6 G-SIXC up for sale, together with some other aircraft…
A shame, but it is a miracle that both she and sister G-APSA were still in use for ad-hoc charters until the summer of 2004…

Click at http://www.atlanticdhg.com/FORSALE.htm for a “deep link” to the “For Sale Aircraft”…
DC-6 G-APSA will display at this year’s Biggin Hill Airshow however, and she is available for further airshow bookings…
Apparently Mike Collett is not prepared to let her go as well…
If I am correct G-APSA is currently configured for “oil-spill response”, spraying chemicals on oil-polluted seas whenever an oil-spill occurs…

Quite so.

Since I too was at Atlantique / AAC in the 90s I’ll let you off without a birching at this time.

You can see the evidence of the “cheaper” operators in the market with Atlantic Airlines operating Estonia registered AN-72 out of Coventry!

This non-objection procedure was about the only reason that Heavylift could operate the Belfast for so long as it could never compete on economic grounds with legions of eastern IL76’s and the like.

As pointed out in the first post, SIXC hasn’t flown for about 18 months now. Probably the biggest reason for this is following the recent expansion of the EU, the freight market was flooded with much cheaper aircraft from countries such as Ukraine. Prior to this, operators from these countries would have to lodge a ‘Non-Objection’ request with European operators capbable of carrying the load and if the EU operator had availability, the chartering company would be obliged to use them, even if they were more expensive.

This is no longer the case and because these Eastern European companies have much lower operating costs and can therefore offer lower prices, all the work went in their direction.

Noise was not the problem it was often perceived to be although as Moggy says avgas supply was beginning to become an issue.

It is sad the work is no longer there, however we can no longer afford to have the aircraft sat around doing nothing. I would rather they move on to new owners than continue to drain money from the rest of the Classic Flight.

Tom.

Certainly be nice Gooney Bird – there is a British derivative of the C-54 -the Carvair that should be in Air Space !- The DC-4 /C-54 certainly operated in some numbers in the U.K with British operators – the DC-6 to a lesser degree.

It would be nice if one of these 6’s will eventually be passed to a museum in the U.K. Duxford?

The main problem is that for the ad-hoc charter market (freight needing moving at a few hours notice) there are fewer and fewer commercial airfields that can pump avgas in the quantities needed for the DC6.

All the big bowsers are Jet A1. Avgas is only available in the flow rates needed for Cherokees and the like.

think it is something to do with new EU (spit sideways!) noise regs at airports.

nothing wrong with the aircraft
