Air Canada to Launch Non-Stop Toronto-Delhi Service

Air Canada will commence daily non-stop service between Toronto and Delhi, the only non-stop air link between North America and India. The new service will shave at least three hours off traditional best routings offering travellers the
convenience of early arrival times that allow for connections to many key onward destinations. Flights will be operated using state-of-the-art 282-seat Airbus A340 aircraft featuring Air Canada’s recently redesigned premium Executive First service. To promote its new non-stop flights Air Canada is offering a special introductory fare until July 17, 2003 for travel until November 30, 2003 starting as low as $1,599.

Cool news isn’t it!:D

But I worry about the yields, I think they would probably be quite low in this market. The North American model generally looks for high yields not a whole range of different types like the Indian market. Therefore, you are going to need a lot of heavy marketing and sales to make a success of this route.

Also, with AC being not in the best of health opening a new and risky route is not the best idea. Anybody remember Canada3000?

I think this route will go in great ways in favour of AC. The number of Sikh community is big in Canada and also number of students immigrating to Canada each year is increasing.

Well yes Adrian,
There is a substansial rate of Indian Sikhs living in Canada, AC would fly them direct to Delhi. And yes as no other airline operates non-stop AC would surely take full advantage of this opportunity. The schedule timings have been devised in this manner, that they easily connect the passengers with the aiports like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and even Colombo (Sri Lanka).

Wishing it best of luck!:)

Although i think there is an 85% cap on the number of passengers because of a bilateral agreement wiht India( I not 100% sure though). Any other routes that they could do?

IMHO, i think AC should take delivery of its 345s and 346s. Yes, they are not at the best time for it but it could work out to be an advantage in the long run. They could have a long haul fleet consiting of:

A333’s
A343’s
A345’s
A346’s

After the retirement of the 744s early next year this fleet would suit them well. Is there anyway AC could take delivery? Also, would the acceptance of the Aircraft be a problem, i know there are two 345’s waiting of them but would they have to wait for a new production slot on the 330/340 line?

Matt

Yeah AC were already planning for a YVR-SYD route when they would receive the aircraft!

In general I believe this route will probably be a success, the traffic demand between India and North America is quite sufficient with the additional benefit of connections to and from Asia. What I believe is a little excessive is the non-stop routing. Is there really that much of a demand? I mean there is no other direct option from North America to India, is that the state of the market or a strong advantage for AC?

Yeah, thats good news, they were going to provide a non-stop service from Vancouver – Sydney but when they delayed or cancelled their delievery of the A340-500, the service remains a 1 stop service via Honolulu!!!
