Hi Members
The excellent programme ” Aircrash investigation” returns to Channel 5 this Thursday at 9.00pm for those of you interested.
It will be very interesting to see ( in future programmes ) if they manage to re-construct the Helios Airways crash earlier in the year.

Hi Judas
Yes mate I know the story well, I just needed confirming what the program was about as I promised airband1 a DVD of it but the wife deleted it off my Sky+ HDD as we had already seen it 20 times, the reason I wanted it confirming was because if it was the DHL / TU154 mid-air collision I can still send it to him as I have it on DVD already 🙂

Sorry about that. The 154 was heading from Moscow to Barcelona over Switzerland and the I can’t quite remember where the 757 was coming from and going to, but it was heading over Switzerland as well at some point.
The 757 had requested to fly at level 360 (I think) due to the thinner air and was permitted. The two planes were then flying on the same level, perpendicular to each other and were on an (avoidable) collision course.
However due to maintenance at the Swiss ATC (sky-something), the controller was lacking several crucial systems as was not able to detect collision path fast enough. The 757 collision warning system told it to pull up, and the 154 system told it to descend. However the 154 crew asked Swiss ATC and because he was lacking systems, instructed the 154 crew to pull up also. This resulted in the collision of the two planes.

It was the story I was after not the equipment used.
Thanks for confirming

You’re half right. It was about the DHL 757 and the Tu-154 carrying mainly children to a Barcelona.

Having not watched this yet can someone confirm it was about the DHL 757 & Russian IL mid-air collision and not regarding the DHL A300 with it’s wing shot at in Iraq?
There is a reason for me asking which I will say when I find out 🙂 (no it’s nothing exciting)

I’ve seen it before on National Geographic I believe – still a fantastic programme to watch for the second time. In my last year of High School we had to do a talk on something and that was my choice. (Not relevent at all but letting you know ;))

I watched half of it.
Was it actually a new programme? I noticed it featured Paul Duffy in Moscow quite a lot but he sadly died last year.

What about the A340 Air France at Toronto a few months ago?
When I was in Canada I got told by a local planespotter who had family on the plane that it was struck by lighting I was 😮

I know there were no fatalities but the a/c was completely damaged so I beleive this as a fatal crash that could have lead to many fatalities!! 😮

There were no fatalities. And also, it was largely down to the weather conditions wasn’t it? It’s not a full proof theory, it was just a personal opinion 😮

Well it was an interesting programme but also very sad. Thoughts go out to the families with lost ones of the flights involved.
Although it shouldn’t take an accident (fatal or not) for people to learn what and what not to do, at least we can learn from these mistakes.
I’ve always found it interesting how there have been no fatal accidents involving an A340 or a 777 (for example – I know there are more planes where this will aply). Could it be that the latest technology they’ve developed for these planes make them ‘safe’?

Totally new programme – for terrestrial T.V. at least – this episode is about the DHL A300 that took a SAM in the wing over Iraq, I’ve read the pilots transcript of what happened and its fascinating, its well worth searching out and the best place to find it is to do a search over on the pprune forums.

I love this programme on National Geographic – is this a new series or repeats?
