A thourght ocurred to me whilst watching The War Lover today (on video, fast forward button at the ready)…
how succesful were the gunners on the USAAF and RAF bombers at bringing down enemy aircraft? are there any figures for how many they shot down? were records kept of individual mens totals? or was the best that they could hope for that they would harass any attacker enough that he’d go and find someone to shoot at?

A ex Lancaster tailgunner I once knew (he died 15 years ago) was credited with one nightfighter destroyed and one possible on a completed tour (30 ops?) He told me very few others in his squadron got one while he was on ops. Gives some idea of the odds. Daylight would have shortened the odds for fighters as well as bombers of course!

Hmm, says I. Should I reboot and switch on my scanner? A bit of contemporary RAF illustration begs…..
