Air India 744 loses piece of fuselage

An Air-India Boeing 747-400 flight (A-I 101) was recalled on Saturday to Mumbai after a portion of the fuselage panel was found on the runway shortly after it had taken off for New York via London.
“The fuselage panel was noticed on the runway after the aircraft had taken off. The Boeing, which took off at 9 am, landed safely three hours later after dumping fuel,” an airport official said.

“The Boeing, with over 400 passengers and crew on board, was called back to Mumbai at around 10 am as it was the technical base so that the aircraft could be attended to,” an Air-India spokesman said.

The passengers were later transferred to another Boeing, which took off at around 2.45 pm, the spokesman said adding, the aircraft, which was grounded, has since been attended to and deployed on another flight.

They recalled it on a 3 hour journey…. should have made an emergency landing at the nearest airport?

Glad it was nothing majour.

Since when is lossing a small access panel an emergency?

Ok its best to turn back, but its hardly enough to warrant immediate diversion to the nearest airport.
