Whilst landing at Stansted a couple of days ago, CS-TMP, an Air Luxor L1011 Tristar 500 was involved in an incident (like the title says). I have seen it outside the hangar where my dad works and it looks to be in quite a bad state. What happened was that the pilots somehow managed to flare so sharply, just before touchdown, that he ripped open the back of the fuselage and damaged the back part of the tail engine. The pilots then panicked and slammed the front down so hard that one of the landing gear doors fell off onto the runway, closing the airport for an hour as they searched for bits of the plane.
How on Earth could 2 qualified pilots manage to do this?
It seems silly that they should be any where near the plane, let alone flying the thing.

It’s possible. I just did a search engine under “Air Luxor” and this site came up. It’s basically a collection of plane pics that came into BHX in 1999 for the aforementioned football final. Every pic has the reg and other info attached.

This one is CS-TEB apparently ? taken at BHX in 1999 ferrying football fans to the European Cup Winners Cup final at Villa Park.

No I think Air Luxor have two Tristars, CS-TMP and CS-TMR, you must have seen CS-TMR in Lisbon.

How many Tristars do Air Luxor have? I thought they were down to their last one. I am certain I saw one land at Lisbon on Saturday, and I thought it was CS-TMP.

Everybody makes mistakes

Yes I suppose I agree woundsinger, a fair point made. I have now heard that they are hoping to ‘patch the plane up’, probably with gaffa-tape or something and then get a certificate from the CAA to fly it back home. However, they need special clearance to fly at 15,000ft where the air pressure is not too much different before the aircraft is properly repaired. I do not think they are too concerned about having to repair it, just a bit of patchwork in the meantime.

Judge and jury seem to have made up their minds very quickly!!! How about we take a while to let the investigators analyse the data recorder before jumping to too many conclusions.

Well, the aircraft might have been caught in wind shear or wake turbulence for starters.

Wannabe Pilot .Before I start I am not wanting to start an arguement with you..I just feel that the last part of your above statement is a bit unfair..
My point is that accidents will and do happen.
The pilots probably had many hours of experience behind them and it was a stupid accident that just happened..
In situations where something goes badly wrong the old ‘flight or fight’ syndrome kicks in(no pun intended..lol) .It doesn’t matter how much training you have you just react to the situation appropriately for that moment in time…Yes in hindsight the pilots are probably saying to themselves that it wasn’t the best way to handle it and maybe there are SOP’s for this kind of event(I do not know.I am not a pilot.).
Anyway I will get off of my soapbox now….
😀 😉
Cheers for the news anyway..

CS-TMP landed at Lisbon yesterday, looking none the worse for ware than it did when I saw it on the 9th. It taxiied up to the cargo apron after landing.

Looks like this could be the end of this tristar? Another one sadly taken from our skies. 🙁
Cheers for the news Wannabe.
