I’m not sure about the presence of air marshals on flights, but I suspect that I’m not supposed to be.

Perhaps a better deterent would be VERY visible air marshal, maybe????
I did hear somebody suggest that a better deterent would be to issue ALL the passengers with 12″ kitchen knives. the minute that any would be terrorist makes his move……

Do any countries other than the US utilize Air Marshals?

Yes Qantas do…not sure about V Australia or Jetstar’s international arm though 🙂

Are they incognito or are they posted guards?

incognito.

I know one route for sure where Air India deploys armed officers in plain clothes, KTM.

El Al also has the anti-missile foil on all its aircraft, as far as I know.

No need to be scared because as far as i know flying is one of the most safest ways of transport, even more so than driving. 😉

Just sit back and enjoy the flight and your time in the USA. It’s a great country.

Not to mention Virgin Atlantic is one of the best airlines in the world IMHO. Definitely the best airline in the UK!

I seem to remember that the issue of Air Marshals comes up repeatedly on the a.net forums. Though they are more concerned with the air marshals sticking out like a sore thumb!

If marshals are to be effective, it needs to be impossible to be able to ascertain whether or not they are present on any given flight. If there was a public policy, terrorists would simply choose a flight on which they would not be present.
That said, I don’t think you’ve anything to worry about. Flying itself is intrinsically safe and security between the UK and the US is very effective.

You don’t have to be scared, most flights don’t have those air marshalls.

Does the UK have a program similar to the US Air Marshals? Virgin being a non-US carrier wouldn’t have US Air Marshals.

Not all flights no. Some us airlines have what are called “Federal Flight Deck Officers”. Basically, armed pilots.
For obviously reasons, the actual numbers of these persons flying around and what airlines they fly is not known, so its impossible to say how likely you are to have one on board any aircraft you might fly. Both the Air Marshals and FFDOs use a special “frangible” type of ammunition in their guns. It is design to drop a person, but not rupture the skin of an aircraft.

I do not think a UK registered plane is allowed to carry any armed personnel, but I stand to be corrected on that.
