Air Museums in Reno Nevada

As I will be spending a few days in Reno Nevada next month, wondering what is available in terms of Air Museums or retoration projects that are open to the public in that general area.

I just checked with my brother who lives in Reno, and found out that there are no actual museums there… although there are, as posted above, vintage aircraft here and there.

The Reno Air Racing Foundation is trying to re-establish an Air Race Museum, their site is: http://www.rarf.org/

This is a good site to find air shows:

😮
CAUTION… i HAVE REMOVED THE AIRSHOW INFO BECAUSE THAT WAS FOR MARCH… sorry for the bad info, I don’t know what I was thinking… maybe I wasn’t! 🙁

There are NO airshows in the general area of Reno during April… which is when you said you would be there, right?

By all means go out to Stead. I was there a few yaers ago and there were plenty of wonderful sights to see …a few Sea Fury’s and the Con Air C-123 to name two (however it was a couple of weeks out from the air races so it may have been unusual).

If you make your way to the Nevada National Guard side of the field they have a CH-53 Skycrane as a gate guard. That’s something you don’t see every day.

The old Harrah’s Auto Museum had a wonderful P-38 in a garage when I was there back in 1980 as well as a reautifully restored Ford Tri-Motor. Both long gone. However the National Automobile Collection is well worth visiting.
Also, I believe a vintage aircraft is hanging in the air terminal.

A bit of a negative here. I went to the races in 1998 and, fired with enthusiasm, persuaded my wife that we should have a look at the Reno Air Race Museum on the Monday. It was mentioned in my Lonely Planet guide to California and Nevada but when I got to the address all I found there was a bemused receptionist and a large warehouse. The question is when did it close and where did it go ?

Hello Pat,

If the hangar doors are open (evenings/weekends are sometimes best) take a trip up to Stead, I’m unsure if Rare Bear is still hangared on the field but John Marlin’s MB.5 look-alike is around there somewhere. I’d also recommend a trip to Carson City which isn’t far out of ‘Town’. Jim Wickersham imports and maintains new-build Yak-9s on the airfield and there’s also a few Grumman Albatrosses around too probably, and a Mustang or two are based there. Have fun, I loved Nevada.

Tom
