Air Nav Radar Box vs SBS-1

I’ve managed to secure financing for one of these invaluable machines, so I really do need to know exactly which one is better, i.e:

> What can Air Nav Radar Box do that SBS-1 can’t and what can SBS-1 do that Air Nav Radar Box can’t?
> Are there any others on the market apart from these two?

I believe SBS-1 can pick up most GA stuff, whereas I’ve heard a whisper that Air Nav Radar Box can’t, is this true? I know SBS-1 is much more popular, so there will be plenty of support available from other users, also, with SBS-1, I think you can download some kind of add-on which converts the hex codes into registrations, is there a similar download available for the Air Nav?

Regards.

There is no requirement for GA in the UK to fit Mode-S transponders before at least 2012 and maybe beyond that, and currently no requirement even beyond to fit ADS-B. Until both are done, GA (or any other a/c not carrying the kit) won’t plot on the “radar” of either SBS or Air Nav.

SBS does not pick up most GA, infact it picks up very little! – It’s a great bit of kit though. If you are willing to mount you’re aerial on the roof for a better reception then get the SBS, if not the Radar Box may be abit better. Like Graeme says, theres many add-ons for the SBS and im very happy with my box.

Im on Flight Simulator atm but tommorow i’ll post some screenshots of the SBS.

Both essentially do the same thing, but there’s far more addons and support from the SBS-1 user community. That’s what I have and it is absolutely fantastic, cant recommend highly enough, however, make sure you budget for an outdoor aerial and very good low-loss coax cable if you want to get the best out of it.

Cheers, Graeme
