Air New Zealand to instal blended winglets to it's 763ER's

Air New Zealand will instal blended winglets on 5 of its B767-300ERs by the end of 2009 and will have eight of its 767s modified by the end of 2010… Mods will be carried out by Aviation Partners Boeing (APB)… a joint venture of Aviation Partners Inc and The Boeing Company developed to equip Boeing airplanes with Blended Winglet technology.

The winglets… 11 feet (3.4 m) in length… reduce vortices drag near the wing tip… resulting in reduced fuel consumption… The 767-300ER winglets are expected to produce fuel savings of 4-6% for medium/long-range flights… and 1.5% fuel savings for shorter flights around 500nm.

Air New Zealand estimates the modifications would save the airline more than NZ$7.5 million annually in fuel costs.

Seems pointless to me…my understanding is the 767’s are due to be phased out as the 787’s are delivered…maybe they know something we don’t???

It’s already been done! There’s a pic or two of the first one leaving Hong Kong having been fitted with them at HAESL. I saw it on the ramp earlier on this week but didn’t get a pic. They do look very good!
