Air NZ plane in emergency landing after engine fails

(BRISBANE, Australia) An Air New Zealand passenger jet carrying about 200 people was forced to make an emergency landing at Brisbane airport Sunday after an engine failed on a flight to Auckland.

Brisbane airport operations manager Cam Spencer said the 767 had just taken off from Brisbane when there was a loud bang. The pilot told the control tower one of the plane’s two engines had failed. Mr Spencer said the engine had suffered a ‘catastrophic failure’, forcing the pilot to bring the plane down immediately on one engine.

Roads around Brisbane Airport were closed and fire trucks on alert, but the landing was uneventful.

An Air New Zealand spokesman said an investigation team was on its way to Brisbane to inspect the engine. An Australian team is also to investigate. He said the engine had been installed on the aircraft in March and was not due for a major inspection until January. He described the incident as ‘totally unpredictable’. – AFP

Air New Zealand does seem to be running into a lot of problems. I think they really need to sort and check out their maintenence otherwise they will sadly be getting a reputation.

Don’t they operate one of the oldest 767 fleets in the world?
