RE: air pockets

Well is wasn’t an air pocket but it sure was a fun ride that’s for sure. Flying out of Kansai International(Osaka)in the J-bird DC-10 the weather was 😮 ing wind gusting in every direction don’t ask how strong it was bad.Had a window seat over wing it was flaping like a bird most poeple were calm until the interior lights flickered and some of the overhead baggage compartments flew open spilling the often heavy carry bags on poeples heads sure was a good laugh. I was also left thinking that a few Japs and others needed something a little bit stronger than Green Tea.It was a hoot. :7

RE: air pockets

Well I was in one on approach to Manchester in a Dan Air BAC 1-11 back in the early 80’s. What a ride! You don’t know what your’e missing mate! (provided you’ve got plenty of altitude!)

RE: air pockets

Never been in an airpocket myself, but I think it did cause either a 707 or DC-8 to crash in the sixties I think I remember reading somewhere. Anyone shed any light on this, because I’m not 100% certain.

When I was onboard a Britannia Airways 767-200 approaching Birmingham a while ago, we encountered heavy turbelence. We must have dropped about 50ft or so, well it felt like 50ft!! Put it this way, there were quite a few passengers on that flight with their eyes closed. One woman sitting next to me was gripping the arm rest so tight I thought she would have left permanent nail marks!

We landed safely though. Summer storms, you can’t beat them.

RE: air pockets

I know that air pockets are scary for a lot of people, understandably, but I’m wondering if air pockets have ever caused any accidents, ie crashes?

RE: air pockets

Hi,
to be honest I am also very scared of airpockets. Once I was abord Indian Airlines A320 from Mumbai to Delhi and we hit a pocket and aircraft had a free fall and at that time I thought this is it. But it recovered after some time and made an emergency landing. It was horrifying.

RE: air pockets

I was on a Crossair Saab 340 on a flight ZRH BSL about ten years ago, when we hit an air pocket. Only time I’ve been in one. To be honest, it was over before I had time to panic. They’re not that bad, really. Nothing to worry about, modern aircraft deal with them problemlessly.
