Police have arrested a man after an ‘air rage’ incident on a flight from Cape Town to London.
South African Airways (SAA) said a man had tried to shoulder-barge the cockpit door of a Boeing 747 six hours into the flight from Cape Town.
The door was locked and he was restrained by passengers and crew and handcuffed for the rest of the flight.
A doctor on the flight examined the man and thought he might have suffered panic attacks or withdrawal symptoms.
SAA spokesman Rich Mkhondo said the 317 passengers and crew on board the plane were never in any real danger.
Mr Mkhondo said: “We’ve had a number of incidents before this one, but we’ve never had someone try to storm the cockpit.”
Police boarded the plane at Heathrow at 0535 BST on Wednesday and arrested a man on suspicion of criminal damage.
He is currently being questioned by police.

RE: Air rage on SAA flight
This SAA incident was fortunately nothing major. It’s good he didn’t get into the cockpit or else that would’ve been a very undesirable situation.
