Air to air nuclear missiles

I know of early US attempts to make nuclear AAMs like the Genie to be used against huge Soviet bomber formations. Did the Russians ever have an equivalent weapon? Also would such a weapon have any utility today- eg. a smaller air force could have a limited number of these to dissuade large scale attacks on infrastructure/airfields.
