Hi all,
Not strictly speaking an airshow, but I had the opportunity to go on an air to air with the HAC Spitfire for the 2nd time this year through Action stations. The weather was awful last time round, so I had to try and get a flight again, albeit a shorter one. The weather was great this time round. Here are a few shots:

I’m not at all jealous of you…………………………………………much lol
Definitely on the bucket list!

Thanks for that, very helpful. I suppose the only thing to add is that if you are able to, shoot in RAW or NEF so that white balance can be edited after the event. I would imagine that most canopies have some degree of colour tint to them, however slight.
There is a good article in this months Aero***** Monthly on Action Stations, the company involved.

Thanks again guys! Slicer – They were shot through window. I didn’t use a polarizer. To get rid of any reflections, I used rubber lens hood so I could press the lens against the glass, but folded back so I could use the 16mm end of the lens in some shots.
Cheers
Rob 🙂

Hi Rob,
You have some very nice pictures, it must have been nice getting the opportunity to shoot the Spitfire from the air, thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Daniel.

Are you able to take the pictures through an open window, or is it cleaned optically flat glass? There seem to be no reflections at all. It doesn’t seem that a polarizing filter was used?
Very very nice pictures…well done, must’ve been quite a day.

Cheers, guys and thanks for your help, Tornado64. I think it must have been a case of staring at them for too long last night! Better resolution versions are now on my website:

regarding the green cast that you seem to be paranoid about
the easiest way is to check your whites look correct if whites are correct with no cast pretty much all the photo will be as white is all colour in equal measures
i used to have a fancy colour cast meter in my colour darkroom for working out colour filtration i quite often ditched it in favour of eyeball and my own colour mixing judgement like adding cyan to get rid of an orange cast
getting the whites right seems to be a rough **** way as sometimes there can be a cast to your whites but it will work in most cases
the white on the polish insignia looks ok to me so they are in the correct ball park for colour filtration

all nice shots , but the very first shot is the best , that is one superb mono shot !!

Hi – thanks for looking – I’ve been a bit worried about the green on the shots all night – and after a few tweaks decided that they’re as close as I can get to how I want them, I’m dangerously close to doing too much to them as it is and my wife’s getting annoyed at the amount of time I’m spending looking at them! – my conclusion is that they’re predominently over green fields which give a greener edge to them although I’ve tweaked a few slightly for when they go on my website…
Here’s a final selection:

Ah yes, that would be the logical conclusion to come to! Apologies!

I presume you are referring to a colour cast? If so, what a rude manner in which to put your criticism across, one that could well stop someone posting up in future – and when we’re talking about air-to-air shots of a Spitfire I severley hope that is not the case!
I tend to deteste a green colour cast, and often go too much towards the magenta in an effort to escape them – thats just my personal preference – and to me this set looks very good, maybe only benifiting from a slight move towards the magenta.
How on earth did you come to that bizarre conclusion?!.
I take it to mean that Waco is green with envy, as in the well know saying, to be be able to fly alongside and take pictures of the Spitfire.
Neither can I see any green cast in the pictures, so you should adjust your monitor!

You are one incredibly lucky man Mr.Laker and I thoroughly enjoyed the set!

Green with envy I would think rather than being about photo…. I know I am.
A very good set.

Thanks for the flap actuator info, something else learnt about the Spitfire!

Its a hinge for the flap actuator. The panel pops open and the actuation arm sticks out of the top of the wing. I suspect, but don’t know for certain, that it was designed to let the pilot know visually that his flaps were down. Also, given the thickness (or thinness) of the Spit’s wing, this was the only method of enabling flap actuation.
That’s pretty much it, yeah.
