Air Wales scrap more routes: Going Under?

CWL-Rennes can be added to the list of routes scrapped by Air Wales before it has even taken off. Just 1 out of the 7 routes the airline announced 2 months ago is bookable, that being the CWL-BRU service, which recieves subsidies. It really does look like the airline is either going under, or are preparing to be taken over. If it’s the latter, I expect it’ll be Aer Arann that gobbles them up. I know there has been speculation regarding Eastern taking it over, but the pattern we have seen, suggests that it’s RE. Air Wales compete with RE, RE compete with Air Wales, Air Wales cans routes, Aer Arann introduces routes. I am going to e-mail Air Wales to find out what the hell is going on. I would appreciate it if other members interested could give up some time to e-mail the airline as well, pretending that we are all unrelated, and see what replies we get back. Just 6 routes are bookable in total- for an airline that has 5 aircraft and served over 11 destinations 3 months ago, this is not right. Something is rotton in the state of Denmark!

Yes, it is very sad that many people are suddenly facing an uncertain future.
I don’t think anyone on this forum would disagree with that. But there’s also a commercial point of view, that says that it’s time for an obviously creaking operation offering an at-best patchy quality of service to give up and let someone else have a try.
It’s not yet clear whether Air Wales has fallen on its sword or has had the plug pulled on it by someone it owes money to, but I don’t see that these opinions are neccessarily contradictory.

BFS

So you’re happy that there are dozens people out of work, many with families, mortgages etc. all of whom who will be wondering how they will manage in the future.

When you’re older, hopefully you’ll be wiser and realise how much of **** (insert suitable expletive) you are making a comment like that.

As far as the situation goes, very sad.

I heard from a friend that they’ve recently laid off some new entry pilot’s they’d taken on.

I would suspect their cash flow sheet must make quite interesting reading with all the chopping and changing and the reference to becoming sustainable by the airline representative further up!

I’m not been funny, and I think the fact you take the time to email the airline is admirable, but do you honestly expect them to tell you anything you don’t already know?

They are not going to give insider information to passengers.

Dear Mr Powell,

Many thanks for your E-Mail received on 15th March .

We appreciate all concerns from our customers with Air Wales’ primary aim of providing a fast, efficient and valued air service from it’s main hub at Cardiff International Airport. It is with regret that sometimes, due to operational problems we delay or cancel services, this is done with much consideration and not a decision by us to be taken lightly.

Unfortunately, shortly after launching our ambitious summer schedule incorporating Manchester, Waterford and Belfast City we had to downscale our plans in order to become sustainable. Air Wales do however continue to fly to a number of domestic and European destinations from Cardiff and to investigate possible future route developments should they arise.

Unfortunately as you’re e-mail refers to information that is commercially sensitive I’m sure you appreciate I cannot respond to a number of your queries outlined .

Please contact me should you have any queries.

Kind regards,

Andrew

I’d like to think so, but somehow I don’t think thats the case. They now have major overcapacity, and the delays and cancellations on current routes are only getting worse. I have just sent them this e-mail:

Dear Sir/Madam

Over the past few months several new routes have been announced, namely Cardiff to Brussels, Rennes, Paris Beauvais and Belfast City, and Rennes to Manchester, Jersey and Waterford. However, just two months have passed and only one out of the seven new routes is still bookable, that being the service to Brussels. I believe this route to be subsidised, so I doubt if its just a coincidence that this route is the only one remaining. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone either, as looking at the Cardiff Airport arrivals board and listening to local radio, it always seems to be delayed or cancelled. Anyway, back to the point. As well as these routes that have gone down before they have even taken off, other routes from Plymouth and Aberdeen have been scrapped too. I know the Plymouth to Cork service was supposed to be replaced by a direct service from Exeter, however this has now been combined with the Newquay flight, a seemingly pointless stop in my opinon. For an airline that operates five aircraft, and just four months ago had a route network in excess of eleven destinations, to now be left with just six destinations doesn’t seem right, and is causing concern amoung many people. Just last week freinds of mine were talking about flying from Cardiff to Rennes to go to their holiday home, instead of making the tedious ferry journey. Luckily they didn’t book the flight, as it seems that if they had, they would have been left out of pocket and without a flight a week later. Whatever route development policy you have is ridiculous, unsuccessful and turning the airline into a laughing stock amoung travellers and aviation experts. I have written before about topsy turvy route changes, and was assured by you that the new schedule would be shortly released and tie up all loose ends. You did announce the new schedule, the only problem is now your tearing it up without giving anyone an explanation as to why. I’m telling you straight, the whole setup at Air Wales seems to be a joke, an old joke that’s not funny anymore, just rude and insulting. I ask you to tell me, and the rest of Wales what on earth is going on at Air Wales, why your scrapping all these routes, what are your plans for the future and if there is even going to be a future. I have e-mailed you before and not got a reply, so I expect to get one this time. If I do not, or I feel the response you give me is as poor as the operation that you run, I am quite prepared to take this to the likes of the Western Mail. You have to earn the title of “Wales’ National Airline”, and so far, your nowhere near acheiving the standards that Wales expects of it’s flag carrier.
Yours faithfully
Jason Powell

It could be a good sign for the cancellations as it could be that they want to foucus on current routes so they can become succesful before expanding.

I’ve e-mailed them 3 times in the past; Twice I got a response, but the third time I didn’t. Saying that I e-mailed Aer Arann in Decemebr regarding the future of their service to BHD & DUB and got no response. I’m e-mailing them anyway, might as well try. In the meantime: Are They Going Under? OR Being Taken Over? and IF SO Who Are They Being Taken Over By?

Waste of time e-mailing them, I did three times about the BHD fiasco and got no response – when I rang them, they admitted they wouldn’t be doing BHD “for technical reasons” which could mean pretty much anything.

Same here i have e-mailed them and it has been like 1 and a bit months and no reply:O

Meanwhile nobody seems to be rushing to take up the CWL – BHD route so it looks as if it ain’t going to happen – disappointing!
