As the first of two weekends at Airbase marking the 70th anniversary of the first British jet aeroplane to fly Classic Flight/Airbase have a booking for their Meteor NF.11 to display at Duxford (a first?) at 14.36 on the 22nd May.
It is due to depart Airbase at around 14.00 and fly to Duxford via the Whittle Memorial at Lutterworth (the FSM Gloster E28/39 on a pole). The Meteor will be landing back at Airbase later.
Also due to fly from/to Airbase the same day is one of the Jet Provosts.
I will post info on the second weekend – focussing on Sir Frank Whittle (his birthplace is but five miles or less by Meteor) – when available.
Roger Smith.

To whet your appetite here’s one of a series of air-to-airs I took of the Meteor en route to Cambridge when Stan H was at the controls.
Fantastic pictures you lucky so and so!
The Meteor night fighters are my favourite versions (especially the NF.14), to me it is when the Meteor got to ‘look right’.
As a more general question, in other countries back seat rides in old aircraft can be purchased, can this happen in this country or are there regulations against this?
You would think that offering back seat (or side by side) flights would be a good way of raising revenue for operators.

Peter didn’t the lack of an ejector seat in the two seat Meteors faze you at all?
No. I was more than happy NOT to have one. I always was the nervous type the idea scared me to death.

Nice photos. Even with all that ‘steelwork’ it’s surprising how good the viz is. 🙂

Lovely photos by the way.

Super pics. Brings it all back.
By the way the best Meatbox was the NF14 with that super hood. A real gentlemans carriage.

Thanks for your kind comments about the pictures. The pilot in the air-to-air was ex Martin Baker pilot Stan Hodgkin (who has now retired) and in the shot where I am flying in the Meteor the pilot was test pilot Dan Griffith.

The second view is one I took during a sortie from CVT in the back seat and you can see Dan G concentrating on doing a run over the field before we headed off over Northamptonshire for some aerobatics. He describes it as a real honey to fly.

I wouldn’t say a first. I’m sure i’ve seen it before at Duxford, evoking i’m sure memories for some of when the NF variant was based here.
Thats got to be a highlight of the airshow for me :).
