A few friends and I visited the Airbase at Coventry/Bagington airport on Thursday 9 June – followed by a trip next door to the Midland Air Museum.
A great day out was had by all – here’s a few photos of the day….

The Hind is in it’s BAe house colours as it was being offered as an upgrade project at the time. On loan from BAe after the project was cancelled.
Were the 2 Hips covertly used at Boscombe Down to train future Afghan pilots fitted with western/NATO systems?

The BP.111 subject is an interesting one, at the very least it should be indoors as it is a one off, a rare example of British research aircraft, and is quite small!
Personally I would love to see it go to Cosford to join the research types collection there, and also relevant to Boulton Paul being a local manufacturer to there.
Again not a criticism of an excellent little museum.

That’s why I didn’t pay much attention to it – it still has a few bumps and aerials from its upgrade days.

‘Converting’ it back to represent a service Mi-24 would need a bit of work I assume ???
Plus – if it is ‘on loan’ – how much would they be allowed to do ??
As for space – the main entrance hall/hangar is absolutely crammed with boxes, manufacturers models, hundreds of donated models, publicity posters/panels, artifacts etc etc.
The four main airframes in there (Tunnan, Vampire, Meteor & T-33) are almost buried under the clutter and are difficult to photograph.
Perhaps the BP.111A should be swapped for the Tunnan or T-33 – it is after all much more significant to us Brits than either of the other two that are kept inside.
No criticism intended – I understand that it is all run voluntairily – but it could do with a good clear out.
There are obviously other priorities though.
The place is very friendly though and has a ‘homely’ feel – the staff are doing a fantastic job on a (relative) shoestring.
The outside exhibits are very interesting – and superbly maintained given the vagaries of the English weather.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

What is behind the strange markings on the Hind heli? Leftover from an art project?

Very nice Flanker man. Had no idea AA still had a Electra earning its keep.
I still don’t get why the unique BP.111 is kept outside though. Must be a question of space inside being at a premium i guess. But having said that i believe this is one of the most significant collections of military jets in the country.!

Vixen’s looking nice, appears to have had a repaint since last year.
Nice pics thanks for sharing.
Yes – the ‘authentic’ Extra Dark Sea Grey is courtesy of Dulux apparently.
We were told they had trouble trying to get a match for the Dark Green on the Hunter.

From Airbase, we went round the corner to the Midland Air Museum…
A few more photos of both places are here.
Enjoy.
