Meteor NF ground running at Coventry. Don’t know whether that means it will fly later.

I managed to last out for a couple of hours today before approaching hypothermia forced me back to the car and home. A promising start to CAF at St Mawgan but it’s a shame there were no pleasure flights because of the wind strength.

It was worth the drive just to see the lovely Anson fly. As a regular visitor to Shuttleworth from the mid 70s to 1990 I’d somehow managed to miss the occasional Anson appearances, so today was a first.

Called in at Spitfire Corner on the way back, also a first. I want one!!

Went along & met up with Spitfireman, Wingcommanderflap & a few others (inc next doors CO)

Not a bad opening event, the Anson did a quite spirited couple of circuits.

It was bleddy cold though & the queue for coffee was quite astonishing, so we retreated to Spitfiremans gaff & watched from his window 😀

We (SPT) are only caretaking XV232.

I will say that based on what I have been told, I firmly believe the Nimrod will be staying at Coventry. Time will tell in the end I suppose, but we’ll continue our involvement with the Nimrod until we are instructed by Air Atlantique (not CAF..) to cease any work.

Kind regards,

Rich

I doubt that any of us know or are likely to get to know the economic rationale behind the move to St Mawgan. I just hope that it works out in the medium to long run.

On a selfish note, being only 70 miles away mean that I’ll get down there a few times a year, including the opening day on March 29 whereas I’ve only been to Coventry once several years ago – an enjoyable visit to the MAM.

I see from their website that they hope to restart pleasure flights in the DC-3 as from June this year ! That is excellent news , both for them and other Dak operators .

SW Economy.

I’ve spent a fair chunk of my life in the SW and I love the area. It has a lot going for it, especially if you are self contained, don’t need to go outside the SW and have a secure income, not directly dependent on the local SW economy.
The politicians and the EU have ******** the fishing and farming, the mining’s pretty-much finished, and the weather places a fickle limitation on the tourist industry. The whole economy of the SW is very fragile indeed. If it wasn’t for all the retired people that move there, it’d be a lot worse.
The Cornish coast is wonderful, but inland, some of it is rather rough and run-down, whereas Devonshire is the reverse, as it’s coast is not as spectacular as Cornwall’s, but the countryside is prettier and a little more prosperous. All the wet summers over recent years have hammered the tourist industry. Added to this, with the cost of fuel, many folks blanch at travelling so far.
I’m sure the move to Newquay was well considered, and I really don’t have any real opinion either way, but I can tell you this, – the SW has very much a low-wage economy. Perhaps they will benefit from this however.
Most visitors congregate at the fringes – around the coasts, and will often just drive right past some of it’s best assets to get to the beaches. The main advantage is that when on their hols, folks are in a better frame of mind to spend what little they have put to one side.
I certainly agree that the local Councils and the Tourist Boards try very hard to exaggerate all the positives, but they are very parochial in their operation. Most councils simply see airfields as ‘brown field building sites’……..
The only meaningful civil a/c operation in the SW is Exeter, where there are, or were, even some classic jets in operation too. Plymouth has the sword of Damocles hanging over it as I recall. I doubt if it has any long-term future.
I think the success of moving this a/c collection to such a remote area, hinges on good, well-targeted PR and advertising. It’ll really be a unique niche business in the SW. The Lost Gardens of Heligan seem to be well-promoted and are very strong. The newly-moved aircraft collection can position itself similarly. I’d add that, if they can provide a good attraction that also works when the weather is wet, – which it often is in the SW, – then they will enhance their chances of success hugely.

Anson is looking complete and out on the airfield doing power runs.

Runway 23 in use and it’s a beautiful day.

Only Rapide (Delta Lima) re-positioned to Newquay on Thursday. Unfortunately, the Anson threw another ‘sickie’ and didn’t travel .

Unfortunately DB the Tourist Board fail to mention the empty and derilict hotels and reducing ‘spend per head’ of the tourists.
This is because the Tourist Board are not actually in the real world tourist business, but sit behind computers trying to manipulate (last years figures) rather than getting out to generate new business.
One of the problems is we see plenty of TV adverts for holidays in Wales,Scotland,Ireland etc,and our response is a spokesman from the TB promoting the ‘new website’ (which looks very similar to the old website).
Cornwall has some fantastic scenery and stunning coastline, but the distance from other parts of the UK makes it a bit of a haul for a w-end visit therefore loosing a fair slice of that business.
Anyway we have a bigger priority to keep Perranporth open as ‘normal’ airfield and trying to preserve its wartime heritage.
