Airborne T-80 Main Battle Tank

A quite bonkers picture of a T-80 tank in mid air and, just for good measure, firing its main gun, lunacy at its most inventive I’m sure you will agree.

” your quite right garry, but there is a difference between a vertical fall and a glide!! lol “

}>
Yes, I believe it is the difference in height for the crew from when they got in the tank to when they got out… }>

RE: Airborne T-80 Main Battle Tank

“about firing the gun tho——-what a retarding effect that would have!!,”

It would probably slow the tank down a little but the forward momentum would be very high… also the difference between the tank and a plane is that the tank is always going to hit the ground again whereas the plane is not really as heavily built as a tank.

“now imagine a 120mm or whatever the size is of a t80 firing from an ‘air vehicle’ that is only just generating enough lift from its forward speed. velocity vector steeeeeeeeeeeeraight down.”

Hitting the ground is inevidible anyway with a 46+ ton tank. (T-64…T-90 all use a 125mm smoothbore).

I have heard that the recoil force from the GAU-8 on an A-10 exceeds the thrust of both its engines… be interesting to remove all the armour and fuel and engines etc and just fill it with ammo… point the gun backwards and see if you could take off… }>

“What a huge muzzle blast !!! How is it possible ???”

That is normal for a gun that size… often film speeds mean you don’t see it properly on the news at night but the 120mm western gun has just as large and bright flash.

On an interesting note (regarding Glenns… “far away” suggestion) I have heard that the maximum range for a 120mm APFSDS round is about 80km… if it could be fired at the best angle… ie about 45 degrees. Most tanks can’t raise their guns to that angle but if they could the high initial velocity and very low drag of the APFSDS round (Which looks very much like a metal dart) would allow such an impressive range to be achieved.

Great picture! Now, the question is: did it hit what it was aiming at? 😉

RE: Airborne T-80 Main Battle Tank

Most T-80 varriants have an excellent power to weight ratio and are perfectly capable of acheiving speeds high enough to “get some air”.

RE: Airborne T-80 Main Battle Tank

Perhaps not the exact picture referenced, but one in a similar vein of a T-90S during a mobility exercise.

RE: Airborne T-80 Main Battle Tank

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-04-02 AT 12:55 PM (GMT)]think hes using the ‘tease and reveal’ method of posting garry. This is nothing new, they put large wings and a twin boom tail on a t34 and it would take off when driven at full pelt, wouldnt like to think about the glide ratio on that- single figures definitly!!lol]

about firing the gun tho——-what a retarding effect that would have!!, it must have been shifting, or have they changed the design so that its recoiless??

you had to be careful about what speed you fired the guns at in aircraft during WW2 in the climb or any other manouver really, in the climb you could loose ten knots from a good burst because of the recoil, and thus a force against the aircrafts acceleration when firing

now imagine a 120mm or whatever the size is of a t80 firing from an ‘air vehicle’ that is only just generating enough lift from its forward speed. velocity vector steeeeeeeeeeeeraight down.

oh, unless its the particularly boring option, and its just leaving the ground whilst travelling at speed across rough terrain….which it prob is isnt it? 🙁
