Apparently that is a normal landing. And it is not a video of the accident.

Now, I know the 757 was designed for this kind of performance. But I have to wonder if the A320, although mostly capable is approaching its limits.

A-320 TACA Flt 390 Accident in Toncontin, Honduras

A-320 Folks:

We regret to inform you that LAAHS.com (Latin American Aviation Historical Society) has decided to supress/restrict any more comments on this subject on its forum.

We strongly think as we commented sometime ago that we believe in freedom to inform, to express, to investigate, to debate, to find out the truth in aviation matters… specially an accident such as this. We owed to the aviation pioneers of the 40s, NewZealender Mr. Lowell Yerex & Company at least a fair chance to expose their case. While many other Central American aviation companies are out of business TACA stll flies the American Continent. We kind of understand the friction with its competition.

At issue here, after one week of speculations & ongoing investigations, is a question for you the A-320 pilots & technicians:

Can an A-320 be stopped in about 4,500 ft of usable wet rwy with tail winds fm 190 at 10 kts, 124 pax & about 30 min of petro remaining??

Are you joking? Look at it. Its embedded into the side of a hill. Everything below the windows is crushed in which means all the flight consoles etc would have ended up where the pilots sit and i think alot of us know its not as easy to get out of those seats as it looks, especially in an emergency.

I imagine the pilots were crushed to death by the consoles etc. RIP.

You’re probably right Andrew..but it looks survivable to me

Looking at that picture makes you wonder how the flight crew perished..the cockpit looks fairly intact!

Are you joking? Look at it. Its embedded into the side of a hill. Everything below the windows is crushed in which means all the flight consoles etc would have ended up where the pilots sit and i think alot of us know its not as easy to get out of those seats as it looks, especially in an emergency.

TACA is still one of the safest airlines in the world. The problem is when you operate under extreme circunstances as in Central America, one has bigger changes of getting “the price”.

We have to remind the poor safety of the airport as many other in the region surounded by mountains, with a really short runway, and deficient drainnage system.

The plane attempted to land previously twice, and the weather was not nice at the moment. This roughly is taken from one El Salvador newspaper.

I am flying next friday ๐Ÿ™ FR to STN…………..keep on watching the weather like mad all the time. ๐Ÿ™‚

They made a couple of attempts at landing in inclement weather conditions..so why did they not divert to an alternate..it seems to be the norm over there to land at all costs..not the first for this airline

In Spain we could add La Coruรฑa LCG as scarry as well. Surounded by houses and hills, short runway (1900 m) with a ravine at both sides, and with low visibility. It has frecuent crossed winds.

Although itยดs just 50 minutes drive I prefer the main one in the area SCQ-Santiago, which is just ten minutes away ๐Ÿ™‚ .

Who remembers Kai Tak? Took off from there into the tail-end of a typhoon in 1995. Now that really was scary.

Among smaller strips, Courchevel has always impressed me. It’s a bit of a shock skiing around it when they’re landing or taking off. Ski-equipped planes when the snow gets thick (I’ve never seen the tarmac, only snow). And yes, it really is as steep as it looks in this video.

Just seen footage of the crash a/c and rescue attempts on french Euronews ( not BBC or Sky yet) and am amazed at the low number of fatalities, sad as always, but remarkable relief for everyone else
