Separating from the current thread, what would be your preferences for a trip from London to Manila with the choices:
747 – LH or KLM
330 – Qatar
777 – Kuwait
767 – Royal Brunei
Cost is within £100 so no great issue, ignore benefits of two seat rows on 767 or back of 747.
It’s a trip we will do in Oct, previous experience, BA,Emirates,LH, and KLM.

The A330 LHR – MNL is with a stop. The only non-stop flight from Northern Europe is by Air France although a couple of years ago Lufthansa were also non-stop.
I will be flying 777 on this trip – 772 SIN-MNL,and 773 MNL-SIN.:)

A 330 will fly from London to Manilla? I thought the really long-range flights were for A340’s. I thought the A330 was for long-haul routes, like New York to Paris or maybe New York to Frankfurt.
Excuse the ignorance, but I thought the range of the A330 was a good bit less than the A340, but the capacity is higher. If that’s not the case, then why the two types of planes?
Personally I’ve only been on the 777, so I’ll pick that one. I really like the looks of the A340 and I hope to fly on one someday though.

Well, the decision is…………….Boeing.
Sorry to disappoint QatarA330, but the Stopover promotion Singapore Airlines are offering at the moment resulted in that choice for the next trip to MNL.
For those who might be interested in the price (Oct flight). LHR – MNL was £478 incl taxes, with a three night stopover in Singapore with the hotel costing £56 per person (total for the three nights). In addition, there are free transfers, a free tourist bus around Singapore, and admission to various attractions for free. Just seemed too good to miss:D
Only downside – new case of SARS reported in Singapore:( 🙁 🙁

Ditto, with what Dan said. 330 all the way, and I hear that the Qatar staff/flights are good all round.

You only have to look at my uasername to see which I’d go for, I’m desperate to fly on the A330!
Also the inflight entertainment is important on longhaul flights for me and Qatar seem to have some pretty good stuff!

That’s great info,QatarA330, and really appreciated:D

batbay,
“Only problem is the connections in Doha which mean a long stop one way and overnight going back”
You can get good connections if you pick the right dates. If flying before the end of October than choose one of the following.
QR006/646 on Mondays only 3h05m connecting time
DEP LHR: 1130
ARR DOH: 2025
DEP DOH: 2330
ARR MNL: 1330 next day
QR006/646 on Thursdays only 2h25m connecting time
DEP LHR: 1205
ARR DOH: 2105
DEP DOH: 2330
ARR MNL: 1330
And on the way back:
QR645/001 on Mondays and Saturdays only 2h10m connecting time
DEP MNL: 0630
ARR DOH: 1025
DEP DOH: 1235
ARR LHR: 1755
If you would like an afternoon departure from MNL and wouldn’t mind a 6hr layover in Doha then you can depart MNL on QR647 on Friday connecting with QR005.
If you don’t find availability on those flights and are not really in a hurry a stay overnight isn’t so bad. Hotel and airport transfers are paid by the airline they put you up in a 4 or 5 star hotel.

Thanks everybody, there are some interesting comments. First, just to fly 747 is indeed an experience, and a good one, but I think I would choose 777 unless you seek the security of four engines. Personally, (and my wife feels the same) I would be happy to fly on the LH 747 every time for the reasons I have expressed in the past (not perfect, but professional and well maintained).
I have a worry about the KLM combi, (as far as service and competence go, I have no doubts), but if I am sat at the back and we have a medium grade accident on take off or landing, where are those pallets going to end up?
We (not Royal – I mean my wife and I ) have flown all the airsraft I mentioned, but I was keen to get your thoughts.
Qatar A330, you definitely tempt me, because we already enjoy our flights on PAL from MNL to PPS by A330. Only problem is the connections in Doha which mean a long stop one way and overnight going back. But Qatar Airways are certainly building a good reputation.
So which will it be? Well it is all down to the price, we would like to do the trip in October and again in January, but to do this we have to go for the lowest cost without totally compromising comfort.
I’ll keep you posted,
Thanks!
🙂

I would say the Qatar A330 or the KLM 747!
By: QatarA330 - 10th August 2003 at 11:53
Hi batbay
It depends really what you are looking for. Is the decision based solely on aircraft type? If that is the case then I will take KLM because of the 747combi. I personally would look at other things.
Qatar Airways will get you there with one stop only and the whole journey will be on A330-200’s the oldest of whom was only delivered last year. Leg room is 32″ but because of the seat construction it feels more. There are PTV’s with 16 channels but no games. In flight service is good and so is the food. The airport is small, user-friendly and recently renovated. There is a good duty free selection. There is not much to pass your time in Doha so it is best if you bring along a good book.
Finally, MNL has a dedicated aircraft A330-203 A7-ACD that is only configured with Business and Economy, if the aircraft is substituted you will get an A330-200 configured in First, Business and Economy and in that case business class passengers are moved to First Class and 18 lucky economy class passengers get moved to business class but with economy class meals and service.
