Airbus slows development of A350s

Hmm, so much for building extra time into their schedule.

Airbus slows development of two future A350s

By Paris Bureau

PARIS (MarketWatch) — Airbus has decided to push back by two years the entry into service of two future versions of its long-range A350-900 XWB, a wide-bodied aircraft that it plans to start delivering to customer airlines in late 2015, according to a report to be published in Friday’s edition of La Tribune.

Citing sources, the report says Airbus now plans first deliveries of the smaller A350-800 and the stretched A350-1000 in 2016 and 2017, respectively, instead of 2014 and 2015 as previously planned, and that an announcement will be made during the Paris Air Show that starts June 20.

La Tribune says Airbus will use the extra time to improve the A350-800 in line with customer feedback. For the A350-1000, and at the request of Gulf airline customers, Rolls-Royce is developing a more powerful engine that will extend the plane’s range by 400 nautical miles and allow it to carry heavier cargo loads and compete head-on with Boeing’s (BA) long-range 777-300.

Airbus is a unit of European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company N.V. (EADSY, EAD.FR).

I have tried to find some articles on the build and design of the 350 without much luck. Anywhere I can have a detailed account of the design?

They are still going for the traditional construction, but with composite skins. I think that is a far better solution for airlines than the barrel construction method. However, the barrel method would seem to win out in strength and weight.

So, what composites are being used for the 350? I have been menaing to ask this for a while? Are they sticking with the traditional way or going the Dreamliner way?
