Airbus, Vietnam Airlines sign contract on sale of A321s; valued at 300 million euro

Airbus, Vietnam Airlines sign contract on sale of A321s; valued at 300 million euro:

Airbus Industrie chairman Noel Forgeard said Vietnam Airlines this evening officially signed the contract announced yesterday for five Airbus A-321 planes.

Deliveries of the planes will be made between November 2003 and 2004, Forgeard said, adding that he estimates the value of the contract at around 300 million euro.

Airbus is currently in initial discussions with Vietnam Airlines for the latter to buy long-haul A340 planes, he added.

Airbus have undercut their prices. With the downturn in the aviation industry it was vital to change the prices as airlines became less willing to pay for new aircraft.
In the case of Easyjet,Airbus apparently offered them very low prices, even though they were making a loss just to get a bigger market share.I’m not sure how reliable the information I had was,but that is what I heard.
However, what is to say that Airbus was offering Vietnam low prices?Maybe it was just that quality of the product and it fitted their operations and needs more.

Well, either way i think it’s brilliant that a european corporation gets one over at the americans. Personally im not a big fan of them these days, and i think that in the time to come there will be a bigger difference between Europe and the US, especially in trade, and thats when we need some good competitive products.

Just for the record, even if Norway is just a hole in the north sea on the Euro coin, we’re still Europeans 🙂

There is a little bit more to the decision making process than that!

20 odd years ago Boeing were guilty of having the market place largely unchallenged by serious competition so they were lazy in their product development. They chose to offer for the future rehashes of the 747 (747-400) and 737 (737NG) rather than spend on development of new concepts and technology. They did however succeed to a point with the 777 (which may prove to become their only strong product) but even then they have not developed the aircraft fully. After all, a fly by wire airliner that still uses a great big yoke! The term ‘use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut’ springs to mind. Boeing will suffer because their designs have always been based on the past whereas Airbus look at future need.
In general, pilots like Boeings and accountants like Airbus. In the past pilots chose the types an airline operates, these days that decision is made by the accountants.

Is it just me, or does Airbus sell a LOT of aircraft these days??

Or do we just miss the Boeing ones?
