Airco DH6 Construction Details.

Currently researching the loss of DH6 C5453 which hit a steeple in St. Ives on 23rd March 1918, killing the pilot, 2nd Lieutenant Kenneth Wastell.

I know the aircraft was built by Harland and Wolff. What i need to know now is the date of the contract for the construction of this aircraft or the date it was completed. Either would be very very helpful.

Wessex Fan.

Thanks for that, really appreciated.

Edited to add: Is there a date when construction started or for completion of the first airframe? Or is it just limited to Summer 1917?

The search goes on.

Regarding DH6 production at Harland & Wolff, I can add little, the contract details quoted are in accordance with details received from Hendon some years ago. The DH6 Contract seems to have been cancelled in favour of orders for the Avro 504 J and K series.

I have checked the company’s official history regarding DH6 production and can find nothing other than a reference to production beginning in the summer of 1917.
Little in terms of company records survive from that time, however two photos of the first H & W produced DH6 do exist although sadly in very poor condition.

Thank you both!

G-ASEA, your information may be an absolutely vital clue to all this. C5453 we know was built because it was lost on the 23rd March 1918. What I need to find out now is whether the timber used in the construction of C5453 was Spruce or swamp cypress? The cancellation of the contract for the remaining 200 unbuilt airframes on 28th March 1918 could be very revealing. Anyone know when the contracts for DH6’s built by Claude Grahame Whute and several other manufacturers was cancelled?

Thanks again.
